Let's not forget how much of a dick he sometimes is. By choice. Because that gets him views.
It's partly this mindset that's responsible for his personality actually
Good point, why don't you back that up with some examples?
well there was that SA post he made that was the most condescending thing i have ever read
yeah there shouldnt be any really. you wanna see people intentionally being dicks? you should watch me and my friends when we find TF2 and TTT servers with REALLY bad admins and rules that make no sense.
TF2: no swearing.
Engineer: "damn it damn it damn it!"
spy in his meet the spy vid: we have to get them before they Fuck us!
and then we get banned by the terrible admin on the server for having a brain.
Is that on the Ego servers? I remember them seemingly being oblivious to the idea that TF2 is rated M or 15.
TBR I think also has the stupid "no swearing" policy.
Good point, why don't you back that up with some examples?
Yeah no I'm not gonna search the internet for examples of him being a dick, I don't have time for this and I'm not going to argue against a thread that's obviously in his favour
Either you saw his stuff and notice that in the way he talks about stuff and his fans or you don't.
well there was that SA post he made that was the most condescending thing i have ever read
You talking about this one?

Good juke, no touchdown though
i really wish FUN was still going with this
its a shame that their brilliant display of intelligence is probably over and the rest of it is going to be handled behind the scenes with lawyers

I'm not asking for emperical evidence or anything, you don't have to give me straight up examples of what he did at this moment in time or whatever. I've seen plenty of his stuff and I know how he talks about stuff and his fans, what's the issue?
Shadow Warrior was a bit too long and not varied enough to be perfect.
Well I never said it was perfect. I merely said it was pretty great. Also objective perfection is impossible, only through subjective opinion and viewpoints can something get anywhere close to "perfection".
Regardless it was still better than Duke Nukem Forever and Howl of Doggy: Woofs, even if the weapons weren't as epic and interesting as stuff from Painkiller.
Yeah no I'm not gonna search the internet for examples of him being a dick, I don't have time for this and I'm not going to argue against a thread that's obviously in his favour

Well yeah he acts like a dick sometimes but that doesn't mean he's doing it for views? How does that even make sense anyway? Do people go like "man this guy is such an asshole, I'm gonna go watch his reviews"?
yeah there shouldnt be any really. you wanna see people intentionally being dicks? you should watch me and my friends when we find TF2 and TTT servers with REALLY bad admins and rules that make no sense.

To be honest, these rules are generally to protect from excessive swearing, more than swearing in general. Because if you allow it, you sometimes get people who just swear constantly. A well placed fuck isn't usually bad, a constant stream of fuck yous is.
Well yeah he acts like a dick sometimes but that doesn't mean he's doing it for views? How does that even make sense anyway? Do people go like "man this guy is such an asshole, I'm gonna go watch his reviews"?
That would be strange indeed, but he doesn't act like a dick, why do you people get this impression? Is it his occassional rants about entitled fans and such? Why would that offend you?
Well yeah he acts like a dick sometimes but that doesn't mean he's doing it for views? How does that even make sense anyway? Do people go like "man this guy is such an asshole, I'm gonna go watch his reviews"?
Drama brings the views. I think that he's just rightly critical of games, which leads to Drama being thrusted upon him by fanboys and companies.
Drama brings the views. I think that he's just rightly critical of games, which leads to Drama being thrusted upon him by fanboys and companies.
That would be true if he was like writing articles, but I don't think drama will make people come and watch some game review for 15 minutes.
I'm not asking for emperical evidence or anything, you don't have to give me straight up examples of what he did at this moment in time or whatever. I've seen plenty of his stuff and I know how he talks about stuff and his fans, what's the issue?
There is saying
"this game is bad look at the textures"
and
"oh my god this game is so bad it's attrocious look at the textures how can anyone in their right mind think these textures/this feature/this setup is acceptable I mean what are they thinking"
One of them is giving critique.
One of them is a melodramatic attention grab.
He does what Yahtzee does,
he prefers doing opinion pieces instead of reviews so he has an excuse for not bothering with fairness or professionalism at all.
Basically he's the Yellow Press of videogame commentary,
he lives of the lowest common denominator,
the "wow look at that at least my game/I/Our Community/my favourite developer is not THAT bad"-factor.
And yes when you obviously have talent, time and infrastructure behind you, chosing to become that sort of yellow press instead of trying to up the standards, primarily your own and then the ones you are writing/speaking about is kind of a dick move.
Look at this guy:
http://www.youtube.com/user/Matthewmatosis
Look at his critiques:

Look how carefully crafted his reviews are, how much planing and work goes into them.
If you can't be bothered to do that, well you missed out.
The reviews themselves are a great piece of journalism and work and offer a quality - regardless of their content - that TB will never reach and yet this guy get's much less attention.
And you know why?
Because most people will not sit though reviews and videos that present such an amount of info over such a time. The density of information, work, insight and thought as really really high.
They rather watch some guy slapping one playing session (mostly without any edits whatsoever) together with some rambled commentary.
Because people enjoy "oh my god look at THAT".
And that's not being productive, not being helpfull and it creates a vile atmosphere.
Basically it's being a dick.
That would be true if he was like writing articles, but I don't think drama will make people come and watch some game review for 15 minutes.
sure did for me :v:
i dunno every celebrity on the planet manages to do it tho? don't get me wrong i can totally understand how hard it must be but i think there has to be a point where you've got literally a million youtube subscribers and you say "hey, i just gotta keep on doing what i'm doing and ignore all the thousands of emails and twitter comments i get a day that say i'm an asshole"
Dunno if this has been said since it was posted quite a while ago, but I'll say it anyways.
You don't think there is a reason why there's lots of celebrities with drug and/or alcohol problems?
killuah
This is because it is an impression, not a review.
He has played a game for somewhat and has pointed out what he finds is unacceptable for a title being released at the time. It is not the same as evaluating a game in its entire. What he will find obviously bad will be highlighted by him, in what way that you describe as being dick.
Let me give a comparison.
If you saw a latrine with bison poop around the rim when you really needed to go and poop and there is no other toilet, would you calm saying "oh look this toilet is bad", or would you get a bit uppity that you have to hover over poop in order to poop.
[editline]16th February 2014[/editline]
I am not sure this is a good comparison.
Well written piece that highlights a great, but misplaced example.
Having recently found and enjoyed Matthew's work myself, you need to understand these are two very different kinds of editorial. Matthew is more academically minded. He often chooses work that's been out for years, details the entire game in order to greatly discuss all of it's mechanics and thematic elements, and really gives no impressions on technical aspects, just the game's feel. Totalbiscuit is more journalistic , though I understand and respect his desire to distance himself from that title because by saying you're a journalist you give people an impression of objectivity and neutrality, which he doesn't agree with and does not put into his work. His videos are generally focused on his thoughts and opinions on a game, and he'll often say how much he's played it for, if the genre appeals to him, etc. and I think he's generally more fair than a lot of detractors seem to notice. He tries to deliver a professionally edited, topical opinion piece on games while highlighting the technical aspects that may effect buying decisions. Where Matthew serves the medium through liberal arts and long-term thought and critique, TB focuses on now, and covers mechanical arts and short-term, "should I buy this or not?" details. He's never damned a game for lacking an FOV slider, having bad texture quality, etc. He just notes it, notes his own feelings, and compliments what speaks to him.
This probably doesn't make the most sense, but ultimately I feel TotalBiscuit serves the medium exactly how he wants to. He notes the good and bad you'd see when you start the game up for the first hour, and ultimately leaves you to decide if you want it or not, with his own thoughts there as well as opinion.

TB always emphasizes that his content is very different to reviews and if you're looking for reviews you shouldn't watch his videos. first impression videos are a good way to get a general idea of the quality of a game without it being spoiled, an in-depth review is something you watch after you've beaten the game already.

It's not a melodramatic attention grab lol, it's personality
and really gives no impressions on technical aspects,
THis is not true, see his reviews for The Wind Waker for example.
He tries to deliver a professionally edited, topical opinion piece on games while highlighting the technical aspects that may effect buying decisions.
No he doesn't. He mostly shows one playing session with some prepared commentary.
See the review the OP is about or the last Need For Speed opinion piece.
TB focuses on now, and covers mechanical arts and short-term, "should I buy this or not?"
THese don't have to exclude each other. He just choses to do so because it's easier and reduces strain on his viewers(which brings in more views)
This probably doesn't make the most sense, but ultimately I feel TotalBiscuit serves the medium exactly how he wants to.
Yes, how HE wants to. It's an opinion piece mixed with a lot of "haha look at that" in his latest reviews.
He notes the good and bad you'd see when you start the game up for the first hour,
Well obviously total garbage shows itself in the first hour but there's stuff that has to grow on you and if there isn't, you deny the possibility of it evolving by influencing the public opinion towards and standard where "first impression counts" .
Shadow Warrior was a bit too long and not varied enough to be perfect.
My only issue with it was the loading times.
It's not a melodramatic attention grab lol, it's personality
oh by bloody good gods and golly of mother-effing course it is an uppity high-level attention grab
see what I did there? I just said "yes it is" in a totally dickish convoluted way. That's not personality.

What's wrong with single session videos? His videos are entirely about first impressions not edited gameplay footage or reviews.

What exactly do you mean by "stuff that has to grow on you"?
You're still missing the point, TB is not a reviewer.

When I say it's personality I mean that is exactly how TB is, never having met him before obviously I can't tell but if you look at podcasts or irl footage that's how TB is, so yeah that's personality.
[editline]16th February 2014[/editline]
he prefers doing opinion pieces instead of reviews so he has an excuse for not bothering with fairness or professionalism at all.
No it's because he doesn't have the time to make reviews, and it doesn't matter because his first impression videos are fair and professional already.
What's wrong with single session videos? His videos are entirely about first impressions not edited gameplay footage or reviews.
A first impression is not always accurate, it's judging a book by its first few pages. Of course you'll see if the book has a good writing style(or translated: gameplay and production value) but you won't know wheather the game is good or not.
Imagine getting a first impression of the first hour of Sim City 5 or worse: Spore.
What exactly do you mean by "stuff that has to grow on you"?
You're still missing the point, TB is not a reviewer.
Yeah, he's an...opinion....er? He's not a critic either. He's yellow press.
Just like Fox News is not a proper news show or The Sun is not a proper Newspaper.
When I say it's personality I mean that is exactly how TB is, never having met him before obviously I can't tell but if you look at podcasts or irl footage that's how TB is, so yeah that's personality.
I don't disagree here I just say he's a dick sometimes and by living off that and gaining views off it you gotta expect to have a stressfull time. Yahtzee is much like him and he knows that people are often pissed and he expects it.
No it's because he doesn't have the time to make reviews, and it doesn't matter because his first impression videos are fair and professional already.
Judging something off it's first impression isn't really fair or professional.
Nobody should waste more than an hour on SimCity 5 :v:
Shouldn't waste any time on it if you're wise. Just get SimCity 4, not only is it more fun AND cheaper, but it's more ethical to buy. The Deluxe Edition is $10 on Steam, which feeds less money to the anathema (both in general and because Steam takes a cut), and less funds are gained through SimCity 5, counting towards the financial proof that, whilst there is still a demand for the city simulator genre, the shenanigans pulled by EA are undeserving of further revenue, and that the money poured into developing SimCity 5 the way it was was frankly wasted.
