Game by Ex-Ubisoft devs tries to recreate entire earth.

Outerra already does this...

Sounds like bullshit. It simply can't be feasible to map out the entire earth "1 square kilometer at a time", or even a significant bit of it. Also, as someone pointed out earlier why use your own consumer drones when there's tons of GIS data available? If they ever pull this of the majority of the world would likely be declared inaccessible for some arbitrary plot reason on account of there simply not being land data for it. "The entire world" will probably just be empty marketing blurb.
Ambition is how new heights are reached but this is just ridiculous. If they really want to turn real gathered terrain data into a game world they should do a small country or particularly interesting region.
If they really remake the entire world exactly how it is now, I'm just going to take my character to my actual house and live there.
I'm going to invade a rich persons house and laugh as he tries to make virtual security kick me out but I know how to bypass it.

That's procedurally generated.
I think they can safely advertise that they've already mapped at least 71% of Earth's surface. Only 29% left!
I wonder if I can go on Facepunch in that game. Let's see them recreate the internet :v:
Looks like a browser game.

said in their FAQ that they won't map places they can't fly and will have procedurally generated biomes like the ocean and ice of Antarctica.
Also it's implied briefly and subtle that they'll use other mean possibly then just uav's. I have a feeling they did the whole "we're going to go balls to the wall and map it ourselves with DRONES", feels like it's was marketing while hiding that they don't have a pre alpha to show a map (note visual prototype not game prototype).
One more thing, they resolution of maps they want to obtain just collecting images in the visual spectrum is a loss of so much potential when there's interest for images in the near infrared spectrum for instance which is useful to better identify water which to a degree and determine overwatering or drought of crops, infestation of plants, and water hidden by vegetation to name a few.

12 characters and all are male, gg
Google Maps + Earth have the elevation/depth data for the entire earth, why can't that just be used to make the land itself? On top of that, Google Maps + Earth have the size and shape of MANY houses, so...this is kinda stupid with that in mind.
[editline]4th February 2014[/editline]
I mean fuck, Google Maps can make a 3d model (texture is pretty bad, but that's irrelevant overall) out of power line towers, just automatically, same with trucks and cars.
Imagine turning up at your own house to find someone else living in it.

Licensing.
Bye.
That's procedurally generated.
Sort of. Its all based of satellite data, then they use fractals to produce the fine details the data. Unlike these folks, the outerra devs didn't have to spend thousands of dollars and man hours to have a drone take pictures.
Waste of time, make a first person game to at least 1/6th scale and come back.

terrain is one thing, but every city, village and building in the entire world?
give me a break, that's not even possible to do today within anything short of a lifetime
[editline]4th February 2014[/editline]
also looking at the game packages, my scam-o-meter launched itself into orbit
If they don't change some of the other important aspects, like the PoV, then mapping the entire world for the game would most likely be a big waste IMO.
- Please note that the Character concept art is for reference only (In-game: characters gender and ethnicity is up to you)

even though i agree this is going to be shitty, you should probably read about everything before you shit all over it
Entire Earth? Erm, I'd rather have a real-scale city and a good game set in it than the entire world and a crap game set in it.
I'm still waiting for "Fuck shit up"
With something like this I'm worried the recreation of the world thing will be the major selling point and the actual gameplay won't be that good.
My concern as well
I had an idea for sometihng like this when I was a kid. Except it was in first person.
Oh you too, but my idea had both 3rd person and first person

If i wan't a mmorpg with a setting in the real world i just play The Secret World
I'd play it.
If it didn't pull a Rust and have your character doing stuff even while you're doing other things because that's a really, really dumb feature.
I can't say I really care for this game, but if you told me this was an MMO and I could blow up my friend's house, ruin the education system even more, and once the world is completely fucked I can escape my troubles by going to a pub, I'm sold.
"Purchase these different packages"
Fuck that. I'm out already
Well the closest to this theyvve gotten I think is 7DTD
I think once 7 Days to Die gets infinite world gen, it will be the most played open world RPG/Zombie surivival voxel
If it took them 1 minute to scan every km^2 and if they did it only on land it would take them only 283 years to finish scanning the earth assuming they work 24/7
Pretty ambitious if you ask me. Also good luck mapping out China or North Korea.
Just pay some one to nuke them.

I hate this game world size craze, games have a bigger focus on being massive rather than being any good nowadays
[editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
What's the point of making an environment so massive if you can't possibly fill it up correctly and most the events of the game are going to be concentrated within 1/10 of the actual map
This is obviously a trick. These two guys clearly work for the government and they're using the drones to spy on us with the promise of an ambitious game. I'll be waiting outside on my patio with a beer and a hunting rifle.
I'll get you yet, drones.
