And then a year later the events of Left 4 Dead unfold.
Virus breaks out. Kills everyone. Crowd of L4D players: "We are the 99 percent"
Sounds like the Spanish flu, the scariest fucking thing no one remembers
I remember a documentary about it, where there were accounts of healthy men in their prime, who would get it in the morning and be dead by nightfall.
Kill the scientists and bomb the crap out of the lab. Kill any one who supports this and prohibith science. Fuck knowlegde now, i want to live. People who approves of this should kill themselves.
I'm really surprised noone has mentioned this. Good movie, but scary as hell.
since when was morpheus a doctor
idiot [editline]28th November 2011[/editline] idiot, anti-intellectual, unthinker
He's one of the people who want to destroy anything that doesn't sound nice at a first glance.
Worse than being an idiot, he wants people dead
Worse than being an idiot, he wants people dead
He wants people dead so he doesn't die. It would be so ironic if later on he died from the virus because vaccine was never developed.
I've been playing Prototype solidly for 2 days SHIIT
"This deadly virus kills half of those diagnosed with it, but it doesn't spread easily. Better fix that."
Read it in Cave Johnson's voice.
wtf why
Bomb the facility please.
Now academics and bioterrorism experts are arguing over whether to publish the recipe
Are you fucking kidding me.
Next up: get working on a vaccine, damn it.
as long as it doesnt kill me i dont mind
Bomb the facility please.
learn to think
Oh boy, biological warfare?
Bomb the facility please.
And release a deadly pathogen into the air, good one.
And release a deadly pathogen into the air, good one.
Nuclear bombs will incinerate the pathogen! Yeah that was a dumb post I never thought about it being released. I just kept imagining a jet fighter zooming overhead a factory complex and then a split second later a huge explosion erupting from the facility and then MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. [editline]28th November 2011[/editline]
He didn't really 'make it worse' It's not like he inserted stuff that wasn't already there. What he did was set up the most favorable conditions for things like to emerge, and see what happened. It can easily arise naturally, which is why the research is important.
That's like saying tsunamis can occur naturally, and will eventually occur again, so someone should make a tsunami machine and release it to the public so that people can research on how to protect coastal cities against tsunamis.
Yeah that was a dumb post
truly, but perhaps you can make up for it
That's like saying tsunamis can occur naturally, and will eventually occur again, so someone should make a tsunami machine and release it to the public so that people can research on how to protect coastal cities against tsunamis.
that's not even a bad idea however a tsunami machine would be too expensive for the public to build, just as a virus is too complex for the general public to synthesize [editline]29th November 2011[/editline] think about it, if we had a huge tsunami simulator we'd probably be way better at protecting coastal cities [editline]29th November 2011[/editline] "that's like saying nuclear bombs could drop, so someone should make a nuclear bomb and let it off so that people can research on how to protect cities and cause maximum damage on enemies" OH WAIT
Bravo science, I'm actually alright with this, if it's something that can happen naturally then I want it discovered at it's earlier possible oppertunity that way a countermeasure can be prepared for the sake of saving lives. Yes it's a scary thought about a disease being able to do this, but I'd rather it be known now and be dealt with then being caught with our pants down helpless to stop it until it's almost to late to save a lot of people Find a Vaccine, keep medical records of it, then get rid of the recipe and the sample of the virus in a controlled way, if all records are burned then we may forget how to create the cure. Science is a amazing thing, I love it.

Releasing the info would actually be a good idea.. let's say we didn't and had this situation: 1. The virus gets out somehow. 2. It mutates to make the vaccine ineffective against it. 3. Instead of giving every scientist in the world a chance to study it thoroughly and learn how to fight it, it was kept a secret. We are then left defenseless at the critical moment when it spreads to loads of people.
it wasn't deadly at all before they tinkered with it
they only made it more contagious, not more deadly. it is very deadly.
Humans sure love trying to create their own demise.
Humans sure love trying to create their own demise.
READ THE ABOVE POOOOSSSTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS c
so much stupid fear mongering
Well thats scary. Why even consider giving out the recipe?
Releasing the info would actually be a good idea.. let's say we didn't and had this situation: 1. The virus gets out somehow. 2. We are then left defenseless at the critical moment when it spreads to loads of people.
The issue isn't the virus getting out of the original lab, the issue is it forming naturally in nature and then catching us off-guard. That's the whole reason it was made in a lab in the first place, and that's the reason for releasing it for public research. The problem is that both researching it publicly and not researching it are both shit options and a bad bet to make. The most ideal situation I can think of is to dedicate a team or several teams of researchers to research a vaccine for H5N1 in a very controlled and secure environment. That way there's no risk of A. having samples made at less than secure research facilities getting out and infecting half the population and B. malicious parties making the virus for biological warfare. Even the biological warfare thing is less of a concern than the security of other facilities. Because while it may be difficult to reproduce for a "terrorist" organization with no dedicated virologists. It sounds like it'd be easy enough to reproduce in your higher level research facility. And with such open means to making it you expose the world greatly to leaks from trying to find a vaccine. That is what's scary, the fact that it's been made that much more contagious, and releasing the research publicly puts everyone at a large risk of a leak from an environment without the facilities to handle this level of virus. Honestly the most ideal solution is to take the bet that H5N1 wouldn't form naturally within a two year span, and dedicate a locked down team of researchers to it's vaccine and have it under incredibly tight control. Because that's a much safer bet than the two presented alternatives.

But if its able to naturally evolve then I guess studying it would make more sense.
