Maximum... ant farm? (joke)
Guys, like someone said before, the size is normal, the just found a way where the larvae turn only into soldier ants, which are the big ones you see in the picture.
What I mean is, the size is normal.
not to mention the 1 mile long colony in china or something like that
A mile long? Pff, that's quite tiny compared to many we have today.
Ants are the most powerful land creatures in the world besides humans. Many plants evolved to give the ants food to keep them from killing them.

See a doctor.
Fuck you science.
Ants are shitty enough as it is.
Science, I normally don't say this but for the love of god STOP NOW!
Haven't they ever seen those movies? Mans downfall always happens shortly after scientists create SUPER anythings

What has science done?!
Mutant penis head ants?
Oh science, you fail to disappoint. Except for that one study that shows going to school makes you more intelligent.
Again venturing where we shouldant go.

Has science gone too far?

They're honestly nothing to worry about. Pheidole is a very tiny ant, and you wouldn't feel their bite unless there were a lot of them.
Never got bitten by a soldier, but I don't intend to.
The worst they can do is maybe raid your kitchen.
Frontal view btw:

Also basically what's happening is, they're activating dormant genes that are otherwise pretty useless genetically. Like snakes with fingers, humans with ape hair, birds with teeth. It's like plugging "unused content" into a video game, except you're doing it in real life and it's just as weird!

imho You have to be very careful with genetic engineering and how it can possibly affect nature/the environment, but disliking genetic engineering for the sake of disliking genetic engineering is crap. Doing something like this to an ant isn't going to cause the world to become ruled by overpowered ant creatures. That, in and of itself, is just jumping to conclusions and ignorant.

How can they even hold up their fucking huge heads?
How can they even hold up their fucking huge heads?
Ants are very very strong.
They can hold up much more than their own weight at regular size. Not to mention as "supersoldiers."
I don't know why but ants are the one insect that I'm really fascinated by.
How can they even hold up their fucking huge heads?
Ants are pretty strong. They can carry about 20 times their own weight.
Its quite interesting watching the soldiers of this species, because they don't stumble or slow down.
There's technically three worker castes in Pheidole- minor (Standard worker), major (Soldier) and super-major (The biggest soldiers shown in the article). Queens are about four or five times larger than a super-major, although they're a lot longer from head to gaster.
Pheidole soldiers have large heads for a reason- they use them to block nest entrances if there's a threat. They can decapitate other ants if they get a good bite.
I've noticed that normal workers are capable of dragging entire crickets on their own, which would be like a Human trying to pull a bus or a small whale.
Timenova, make a thread. I have never been more informed/interested about ants until your posts.

Might do, depends on what section people have in mind. :tinfoil:
And it may have to wait until tomorrow, after college.
ants bit me on my dick as a child, fuck ants
i wonder how bad it would hurt to get bit by one of those supersoldiers
OH MY GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE. Ants and bees are the top two most horrifying bugs/insects/whatever the fuck they are.

I think they're cool because they have genus that can actually conduct human scale warfare.
I think they're cool because they have genus that can actually conduct human scale warfare.
You have made me want to build a large scale controlled group of ant colonies whom will be isolated and given different resources and numbers of said resources than the others and watch as they conduct diplomatic actions and war. FOR SCIENCE!
God, whats up with this fascination on 'supersoldiers'? Did they read too much marvel comics?
I think ants are truly fascinating, and I wish we could do more of this useless gene work.
I read "The army breed 'supersoldier' ants :v:"
Warfare anno 2012: Supersoldier ants.
