I hope classical music makes a come back into the "popular music" realm. When I use classical I actually mean romanticism era, its funny how classical is used to define a whole style of music when that was only one era.

That'll never happen and I don't want it to happen.
Why should I need a type of music to dominate society?
It's not like classical dominated society before 1900s anyway. Believe it or not, traditional folk/country music was a LOT more prominent within society.

It won't, but there's plenty of art music being written now. Look at the music of John Corigliano, George Crumb, John Adams, and Krzysztof Penderecki, among others.
The reason art music written now doesn't command the same audience as traditional classical- and romantic-era music holds is that it isn't strictly tonal anymore which is something that is hard for a lot of listeners to get past. In addition to this, while chamber ensembles are up to playing new concert works, orchestras, especially in the United States, shy away from new works with the exception of more tonal pieces by composers like Philip Glass.

I would rather listen to something like this over anything else.
Mixed Genre music is where it's at.

Coincidence, promise.
might sound ridiculous to most people, but this is correct.
Chuck Berry and Little Richard opened the entire game wide open. Music played a HUGE role in the acceptance of racial differences in western society.
it's kind of weird to think that little richard was an extremely edgy rock and roller at one point and now he's just the most banal thing
The times get to people.
The one Enema of the 60s that didn't get to them was Bob Dylan imo. He's still-a rockin' and he's still his good ol' self.
bob dylan is an immortal god of folk legend

Is "good music" a type? Because that's the type I want to dominate society.

Exactly, it doesn't matter if your favourite music is the most popular or not, I say it's better if it's not dominating as then you have people making that type of music because they genuinely love doing it and not doing it to make tons of money as that's second instead of first.
To listen to the thing..

I'm sorry, but I am hard pressed to find modern music that is truly as beautiful as this:

I am sure it exists, but it is so pushed down by the shit music that it's so difficult to find...
Most people assume that classical music is so simple, and of no interest, but if you just listen to the harmonies of the likes of Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, it is so much more.
I think that it's funny how everybody always think's that all music in the 60's and 70's or whatever was amazing. There is good music in every era, and there is shit music. You just don't hear about the shit music because nobody wanted to remember it.
Only good music will stand the test of time, no matter what year.
What sophisticated young fellows facepunch has to offer, denouncing modern tat in preference of traditional musicians!

Not all modern music is rap.
Look at The Offspring, Foo Fighters, Puddle of Mudd, Volbeat, Chevelle, Shinedown, etc.
There is pleanty of good music out there. Most people dont listen to classical because there is not meaning behind it. Music is how people express themselves.
Where did I say that all modern music is rap? I clearly stated that there is modern music as good as the Debussy song I posted, just that there was also a lot of shit music...

Hip Hop is a wonderfully expressive genre imo. Some rappers can be ridiculously ruthless in their performance, it can be hypnotic and immersive too.

There you are. Don't denounce modern music simply because you haven't explored it fully. The academic world still writes many art pieces, you just have to look for them as they are no longer mainstream.
What sophisticated young fellows facepunch has to offer, denouncing modern tat in preference of traditional musicians!
I feel that many people think those who profess to enjoy classical music are doing so to seem 'sophisticated' and not because they actually enjoy it. On the contrary, the vast majority of people I've met who listen to classical do it because it 'speaks' to them. You also don't have to enjoy classical music exclusively, which is another misconception held of avid listeners of the art. Hell, I listen to pretty much every genre and my composition professor, who has his doctorate in composition and music theory, loves Radiohead as much as he loves Brahms.
Most people dont listen to classical because there is not meaning behind it.
I just had an aneurysm.
Did no one read the second part of my post? I said, right there in the post, that there is modern music as beautiful as the one I posted...
Music isn't just about the expression of the artist. It is mostly the listener's experience imo and how a connection is made.

Who honestly cares though? a lot more people know your classical music then the music I listen to and I honestly couldn't care, like I said, it's better like that as it only leaves the people who actually want to make it there, not the people who just want money.
Sure it's harder to find but hell that's honestly half the fun

You don't want to use those bands to convince a classical fanatic that modern music can be good too :v:
