There are different degrees of homicide. There's murder of varying degrees, there's various types of manslaughter, justifiable homicide (self defense), assisted suicide, and so on. It's not automatically murder because a person died as a result of someone else's actions.

Self defense is an exception to laws stating that you may not kill another person, thus the burden of proof is with the accused in cases of self defense. It is always the accused's responsibility to prove self defense due to self defense being an exception on something otherwise illegal.

I don't see how there is so much argument over this. Self defence is an affirmative defence, which means that Zimmerman must prove that killing Treyvon Martin was justifiable.
