A kid who went to my school ran at a police officer with two knives and was summarily shot seven times. Being that he was 14 there was a bigger controversy about it.

Thing i'm wondering is when you want to stab someone you usually go for the chest/stomach, and seeing as the cop was likely wearing a bulletproof vest the kid stabbing him in the chest woudn't have done shit to the cop.

Tazers are hard to use, one prong fires directly forward and another one shoots at a downward angle. They don't both come out at the same direction. And for tazers to work, both prongs have to hit the target. The farther away a target is, the more likely you are going to miss. The prongs spread fast and far in a small amount of distance, you have to be right on a target to hit them with 100% accuracy and certainty. Tazers also have one shot. And if the person charging you with a knife is on drugs, chances are they can still attack you and kill you even if you got both prongs in and are frying their ass.
On the other hands, guns shoot straight and have less exceptions to them. Cop's training of "shooting until threat is eliminated" will make sure any threat will stop, even if they are on drugs.
Sorry but it's not a perfect world. Can't use tazers, mace, and batons for everything.

I think you misunderstood my post... I was trying to imply that the officer had no other choice but to shoot. I like this statement though.

The Officer to the right in the video had a Taser and he was told to use it. But a taser isn't like a gun, you have to be pretty close because it just fires two hooks/prongs on a wire into somebody and he was getting closer whilst being careful that he didn't see him or attack him instead.

If you get hit by a tazer you will instantly convulse and lose control unless you are some kind of a superman (which I doubt the teen was). It's not like it doesn't instantly stop you.
