At first, I thought the "Sentenced for 290 years in prison" in the title of the thread was just a typo, then I saw the actual article and it said the same thing. Couldn't they had just said that it was a life sentence? Because there is very few people who has even lived as long as half of that sentence.

He fondled them while they were asleep. (Unless that was just the article giving a example and not the whole extent, I dunno) Whenever I see stories like this it seems like the sentence is always a complete overreaction. I mean, molestation like this is terrible, there's no question about it. Even if it's not physically damaging to a kid it can traumatize them nonetheless, but there's not even any purpose to a 290 year sentence. It's pretty much just a way for a judge to go YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON I AM GOING TOO PUT YOU AWAY FOR THREEE HUNNDRREEEDD YEEEAAARRS JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED THIS DAY I AM THE LAW. It serves no real purpose except self-righteous dickwaving. When child molesters or even less, pedophiles who are only arrested for possession of child pornography, not for its creation or distribution, are getting worse sentences than murderers, society is letting its disgust get in the way of its judgment.

A murder is a terrible thing, yes, and I'm sure you've (or known someone who) had relatives die. How long did it take you or your friend to get over the grieving process? A traumatizing event like this can leave emotional scars that last for a lifetime. I've known people in similar positions. Depression, drugs, alcoholism, the inability to form meaningful relationships- the lot. This was an adult too- I'm sure it can be much worse when it concerns a child.

The sentence seems far too excessive, you can get away with murder for less time. His actions were undoubtedly wrong, but I can't help to feel that the demonization of these pedophiles is getting over-the-top.
