People really need to read the article before whining about the sentence. He was facing twelve charges and was found guilty on all twelve of them. The sentence is probably made up of twelve different sentences being served consecutively.

As for why he didn't just get a life imprisonment charge? That's because life imprisonment is not actually life imprisonment, it just guarantees jail time for a certain amount of years till you qualify for parole. Judges hand out sentences like this so that if the defense manages to appeal a few of the charges, the defendant doesn't get off scot free (the same applies when a judge hands out multiple life sentences.)

The defense will probably appeal most of the sentences and get them reduced, but considering he still has nine charges pending, he'll probably end up with a sizable sentence.

Usually not in the US. It's just straight up maximizing of profit and almost slave labor. Wish my family had built a prison in the 70's, I'd be making loads of dosh and I'd also have a great place to hole up in the case of a zombie apocalypse

I like how normally most Facepunchers would be in support of a justice system that deals out adequate punishment according to crime, but then as soon as a news thread about someone doing something we find repulsive like this comes along, there's always a chorus of people calling for mob justice by other prisoners. But that depends on what our society defines harm as. Older men and younger boys in a sexual relationship has been acceptable in previous societies. Social parameters are a significant factor in determining what mental illness is. So, you're both part correct - it is a mental disorder in the western world. It is not some objective cross-cultural diagnosis.

Don't get me wrong though. I'm no more condoning pedophilia than I am rape, murder or pillaging, or whatever crazy practices someone can come up with.
