The problem isn't letting people who went on sanctioned hunts take their trophies home. I may disagree with it in practice, but in theory they should be allowed to keep their murder trinkets.
The problem is that lifting this ban completely revives the whole fucking ivory trade in the west.

You're implying that poachers haven't remained active anyway.

Was there any significant Ivory trade in the west prior to the ban? The ban was on trophy hunting, not just ivory, and I doubt someone was going to spend upwards of a 100 grand to bring an elephant tusk back to the US and sell it where it won't make nearly that much.
I highly doubt a trophy ban repeal is going to revive a long dead trade in the west. The market for ivory is almost exclusive to Asia these days.
What a perfectly fine reason to trophy hunt endangered animals. As long as we only kill a few of them to sate our instinctual blood lust and appease the horned god of hunting, Cernunnos, it should be fine.
Sorry it offends your personal sensibilities, but each elephant hunt raises as much as $20,000 for conservation efforts, while self-righteousness is contributing exactly nothing to protecting endangered species from extinction.

Wow I've never seen a straw man so big it became a celtic wickerman before.
There's something poetically metaphorical about a Republican wanting to reverse a ban on elephant trophies.
"Daaaaad, erik and I wanted to go hunting in zimbabwa but they said we can't take the elephant head home and were gonna put it over your bed!"
"Oh lemme just get my pen out..."
Well, he actually acknowledged public backlash in a non-"fuck off" way for once.
He will "study" like he "studied" about the Global Warming.
I do not expect that he will follow facts this time and not his "I think" attidute.
Legal or not, I personally can't see why anyone would want to hunt a Elephant.
$$$$$$$$$$$$ is my number one guess
A lot of you are missing the part where the 'ban' thats being lifted is a ban on hunting in areas where they aren't aiding conservation.

the country is under a military coup right now and stupidly they announced this decision the same day. it probably didn't take long for someone in his admin to realize it would spark massive amounts of poaching and fund terrorism, but then he's only reviewing this policy again, which is waffling on the entire reason to ban trophy hunting in the first place.

You're implying this doesn't perpetuate it
This has to be a decoy to distract us from something far worse.
If it isn't, then holy shit.
Apparently Trump caved to the public outcry and reversed the order.
