judging by a few factors, it could follow a routine storyline of "we fought one off and barely survived after doing the whole missile thing, before anything else shows up let's build up something that can deliver a lot of physical momentum to hopefully break something, since explosions are just charring its thick armor [editline]e[/editline] whoawhoaWHOA holy can someone listen to [glados] at 1:10 in the trailer? I swear now all I can hear is "Ready to activate the EVA in 3... 2... 1..." tell me I'm just looking too hard for the word EVA and it's something else because I keep seeing things to relate to evangelion and this really worries me now
Yes, it did say EVA. "The EVA" And Japan is on the Pacific Rim... but thats probably not any worthwhile detail.
Giant robots are rarely able to carry a movie on the cool factor alone. The writers wrote themselves into a hole as soon as they did that. This is going to be exactly like battleship, I don't even know why FP is excited so much. I mean, look at the trailer. Look at how much story and "look at that cool stuff!" they crammed into it. That's a clear sign that a movie is going to suck.
dude i dont think you get it the russian jaeger has like a giant church bell for a head http://www.panpacificdefense.com/files/images/shared/documents/PPDC_Blueprint_JaegerChernoAlpha.jpg that is enough to carry this movie alone.

It always feels like a complete idiot plot whenever someone does that. One story called "The Salvation Wars" actually reverses this premise completely. In it, god basically says "alright, it's been fun guys, but I don't really give a shit anymore. Everybody, lay down and die! As for the rest of you who want to disobey me, Satan will come and pick you up soon. Bye!" Satan then asks humanity to surrender to him immediately or he will unleash the armies of hell. And the humans declare war on hell. So Satan gets pissed, and sends a massive army to attack humanity through a portal in Iraq. And it gets curb-stomped. Entirely. Even the humans are surprised at how easy it was. Because when you think about it, what do demons have that humans don't have already, or have better, improved versions of? you should have realized i've been fooling around at "i hope they show glados onscreen to make people mad"

I think everyone who is saying this is going to be "a big dumb mindless action movie" are forgetting the director. Nothing Guillermo Del Toro has ever made has failed to impress me, and I'm pretty sure this is going to be awesome too. (plus Idris Elba is a fucking badass)
guys the actual trailer is this one
Nah, GLaDOS is saying Jaeger. The draft script has been leaked for a while and isn't awful.
I don't know about you guys but I think this movie looks like it's gonna fucking rock.
Giant monsters Giant robots Ellen Mclain Best movie ever right there

Apparently he's a major fan of the series and it shows in Pacific Rim. How about how the operators of bipedal, land based vehicles are referred to as "pilots"? Or a single, shadowy organization in charge of defense for the planet? Either of those cinch you on the deal that this is a homage to NGE?
can i just say that while we're talking about evangelion that the 3d bullshit in the new movies is way way worse than the original 2d animation
It's Because Del Toro was slated to direct the Evangelion live-action. I was really iffy about that one when concepts started coming out too, even back then it felt like they were taking one thing that was cool and slathering other cool things on top without caring for the original integrity. I like the idea of giving things a fresh new twist, but things with huge fandoms can be very delicate to handle plus they renamed Asuka 'Kate Rose'
can i just say that while we're talking about evangelion that the 3d bullshit in the new movies is way way worse than the original 2d animation
what? rebuild is spectacular, they even made ramiel cool. the only 3D that was jarring to me was that thing asuka fights in in her opening scene
It's Because Del Toro was slated to direct the Evangelion live-action. Apparently he's a major fan of the series and it shows in Pacific Rim.
And this is why I don't get why everyone is freaking out. Remember that giant plant fight in Hellboy 2? This is a whole movie of that, only 100x bigger and with robots. And not only that, but we get to bury the live action Evangelion movie too. So there are a bunch of shout outs to video games and shit. Isn't that the point? Just have fun with it assholes, jeeze. [editline]14th December 2012[/editline]
the WETA produced one? It's the problem with any 2d/videogame to live action adaptation. The amount of processing it would take to make the designs work would ruin the original feel.
Double relevant to the thread :v: But seriously I plan on watching this and enjoying giant cheesy robots fighting giant cheesy monsters. I'm not going to go see this expecting a gripping drama filled story, and if there is one... well that's a bonus!
I don't see anything wrong with the GLaDOS voice, doesn't really seem any different than using a well-known actor/actress. As for the movie itself, well there's really not enough information to be sure so I'm not going to jump to conclusions.
"Well, there’s a reason many people were getting a GLaDOS/Portal vibe from the clip. That’s because it actually IS GLaDOS. The voiceover work is done by GLaDOS’s Ellen McLain. It’s not just her however, she’s had her voice run through nearly the exact same alteration process as in Portal, which is why the two sound identical." This is pretty different really [editline]14th December 2012[/editline] it would be like making a character sound exactly like darth vader, or EXACTLY like the recent Bane, or other character with a modded voice. why do you need it to be EXACTLY like darth vader/bane/etc? Really? You need it to sound exactly like a major character from another story and kind of ruin the mood with that? Nothing wrong with using same actors, but this is why people don't reuse actors from TV shows super often, the face is too known.
Because it's cool? Isn't that the answer to why everything in this movie is the way it is?
Everything in the movies fine except that. Would it be fine if they had darth vader and bane it as well? What if they had Captain Kirk and Rick from walking dead? :v: At least be somewhat original is all, you know? They could have easily modded it to sound different. they had millions of things to choose from and specifically did that is basically my point. I just want to see giant robots beat the shit out of giant monsters. Why is everyone overanalyzing this shit?
"It's too much like these things! It's also not enough like these things! They're copying too much of the stuff I like! They're not copying enough of the stuff I like!" Come on guys.
Her voice is completely unfitting for the setting. It's like I'm watching some fandubbed shit where they decided to add Glad0s' voice in for shits and giggles.
That's just because you know the voice... if you look at it objectively there's nothing wrong with it... it's just a robot voice. You guys are whiny. It's not like they're slapping the aperture logo on the robot or anything.
I'm still hoping that somewhere down the line somebody makes a decent Megas XLR movie. That would be so good. Giant robots beating the shit out of other giant robots/aliens with corny jokes thrown in.
