I hear people comparing the similarities of this to Neon Genesis Evangelion.
We have to see this and find out.
how are these iron giant-style slowly marching metal colossi similar to big ridiculously colored robot ninjas that wear 80's-style sneakers and wield what looks like some sort of laser carpet knives
you know, these
Curious - is Asuka's german in rebuild still so painfull to hear? Or did they get someone who can actually make at least a passable accent.
Been too long so I don't really remember how bad it was, but can't be worse than black lagoons english(While for some reason they get russian like, perfect)
i hate how much CGI is used these days, nothing looks nice, it all looks way too perfect
I think i also recognise the voice on the intercom at the very begining, the one that says "we dont know what they are or where they came from", sounds an awful lot like the voice on the Dunwall public adress system in Dishonered.

To be fair, the only other way they could do a giant monster movie with mecha like this is with rubber suits.

But the T-Rex Animatronic moves really slow, the running T-Rex was CG. The rain on the Jurassic Park set made the T-Rex slow down and jitter A LOT, so every 30 minutes or so they would have to sponge it off to make it work properly. Look at all the water in the trailer Pacific Rim trailer.
Hell, Audrey II's final form in the Little Shop of Horror moved slow even without rain. So slow that the actors had to move slowly WITH it so they could speed up the footage. Animatronics aren't as cost effective as CG nowadays either.
How the fuck would you do a giant monster movie with aninmatronics.
Why would you even do it when the same result could be reached with rubber suits, which would actually look better.

Key note: we're talking about godzilla sized monsters here.
Thats about the size of your average skyscraper.

Ever even watched the show? Come on dude
I like how the jaegers and kaiju feel large in that trailer.

gigantic monster-like beings attack and humanity uses humongous mecha to fight them
where are the other similarities? it's not the most original idea so you can't possibly say that Pacific Rim rips off Evangelion
To me, the trailer reeked of Evangelion. But I guess that's just because I really enjoyed and know a bit about Evangelion.
The way they control the mechs is almost exactly the same as a really old game called Metal Fatigue:

That was such a great game.
There is a possibility it is GLaDOS from an alternate reality, as that would be tie in with parts of the portal canon. I hope they go full cheese and have loads of video game character cameos in this.
a movie with japanese-inspired kaiju monsters has to have japanese-inspired humanoid mecha
is it really that difficult to understand, seriously guys, you just can't pit a (more) realistic walking tank-style design a lá BF2142 or Mechwarrior against an eight-armed godzilla that breathes burning mercury. if you throw practical/realistic and cheesy into the same mess your chances at failing to deliver are much higher than if you crank the Cheesy knob up to eleven and have the radioactive crab octopus wrestle an oversized Iron Man with stars and stripes painted all over it
Walking tank style mecha (titans, more realistic battlemechs, bf2142 mechs and simiar) are mechs that look incredibly well in large scale war movies perhaps. They're like that iconic tank company charging over the field.
But they just aren't expressive enough to become "characters" in a sense just by themselves. They're more always in the background, rarely very rarely in the main.
They work really well in books, stories and games though.
But there's a reason you won't see a BOLO movie most likely. And why most mecha or mecha like constructs in movies, which drive said movie, tend to be far more expressive and usually very human like.

Another one would be the Armored Core series with the way the mechs aren't incredibly mobile.
But ehhh
It would appear that the movie is based on this game:

Showed the trailer to a friend who plays this game, and he got the biggest nerd boner stating that some studio got the rights to do a movie based on the game, and that he recognized the monsters as being from the "Planet Eaters" faction.
It’s like if they threw Kratos in Wrath of the Titans, or something similarly out of the blue.
I'd pay to see that.

why not have mechs like this
Why the fuck did they make it EXACTLY like Glados, they could have used different filters or something.
