I get what your point is, but like most ani-gun people, you're beating around the point here.
[editline]17th January 2012[/editline]
That is how you feel, and if you feel that way then don't have a gun in your home, I have the right to and will always keep a variety of guns locked and safe in my home. That's the beauty of freedom.
But I'll bet if your family was ever attacked you'd want a gun.
I definitely don't disagree with the use of lethal force to save someone's life, be it a gun, a bow, a knife, or whatever. Self defense laws aren't as different in my country as some people think - I'm free to keep a firearm secure in my home if I wish and if someone breaks in and threatens my life or the life if my family I'm free to use it.
But I'm also appreciative of the danger that having one in the house can present, especially around children. Not just because of accidents, but because of the mindset it'll put the user in should a self-defense situation arise. When you have a gun you feel powerful and may end up inadvertently putting yourself or your family in more danger if you're not skilled with using it. You can't practice a life or death situation at the range either, so really nobody is as skilled as they should be.
I think we all owe it to our families and society as a whole to try and minimize the loss of life first instead of just shooting and asking questions later. But if that's not possible then yeah, I agree with you and just hope that if I'm using a gun in self defense I know what the hell I'm doing. Losing family to a violent robber would be terrible but if I lost family to the fact I was careless trying to defend them I couldn't live with myself.
What the fuck does that have to do with anything, knowing right from wrong isn't going to save you from being robbed.
Have you been reading what we're talking about???
What the fuck does that have to do with anything, knowing right from wrong isn't going to save you from being robbed.
You must not have read the preceding posts. Knowing right from wrong keeps your defense weapon that keeps your family safe out of the hands of your children.
It's not so much the question of whether or not they had a gun, so much as if they had a gun, would there be a realistic scenario in which it could be put to use.
Honestly one of the first things I'd buy after getting a house, particularly in an urban area, is a gun, but I think it's a little bit presumptuous to assume that nothing bad would have happened and everything for the family would have turned out fine if they had a gun.
Hell for all we know they did have a gun. Just not enough info to be coming on Facepunch and pushing our political positions around, imo.

Yes, "if" they have a gun is why you tell them that they are not authorized to be in this residence, and you are armed. They have 3 seconds to turn around and leave. Also tell them any movements inward from the door/window/whatever, will force you to engage them.

See there you go, now I agree with you 100%.
I'm not saying I'm a professional at life or death situations or high pressure situations as I haven't been in many, However I've practiced all kinds of shooting and defensive shooting drills. I know the ballistics of guns and ammunition and am well aware of many "tactical maneuvers". I'd be terrified if the situation arose but it wouldn't stop me from doing what I know how to do. That's the point of practicing, drilling it into your head for when the pressure is high and hoping you can perform.

Same here. This is why we plan for the worst.

I was talking about the family, not the robbers, who the article states did have a gun.

Yeah they apparently beat him with the butt of whatever they had.

Which is why when someone breaks into my house, I'm going to determine the caliber of weapon I pick up based on the number of assailants.
> 2 = AK74 Rifle

You don't need an assault rifle for home defense. You can't maneuver around corners with that. The barrel will stick out, or some part of the weapon will show. Handguns are the best option. Laser sights are even better. 3AM, just shoot whatever the red dot is on!

I'm just kidding :(
My go to weapon is my Remington870 with a aftermarket folding stock.

Sweet. Nice weapon.

What a great description of the perpetrators, I am sure they will find them with this critical information.
At least we know to look out for the three black stooges.

Or just buy a house with a really long hallway at the entrance and make it into a tower defense

I just got a 1500 square foot townhome, I think it's pretty secure. The back is at ground level with a 2 car garage, pretty secure. The front is the soft point, a couple windows but I sleep lightly as does my wife.
That's great, but the three seconds to open it plus the 10+ to get it out and load it is time that I'd rather spend running to make sure the rest of my family is safe. For me, getting the gun would always be step two
10+ seconds? huh?

Sucks that I can't carry a gun here in Maryland outside of my house though.
guns = snake oil
they cure everything
but not really
itt: "none of this would of happened if the wife knew how to shoot a gun"

Nice, it's not a matter of being a super cool tough guy who fears nothing or being a piss ass bitch.
It's about having the means to defend yourself.
Uh you could just hold them up. And since she was upstairs in the first place she could get the drop on them.
Also if I was the husband I wouldn't give a fuck if my wife took the chance at MAYBE hitting me over being tortured for an hour+
guys, owning guns will solve every problem instantly!

a baseball bat could suffice during a home robbery. But in an extremely tense and complex situation, just saying "NOPE, GUNS SOLVES EVERYTHING" is both ignorant and flat out stupid.

I didn't say "Nope, guns solve everything".
And no, a baseball bat in my opinion may only exacerbate the situation; What if the attacker has a gun, and you have a baseball bat? What if they have a large knife and you miss on the first swing. A gun will almost always level the odds, especially in knowledgeable and experienced hands.
What if they aren't there to rob you?

Funny you should mention ignorance.
How would a baseball bat help someone who is disabled?
Or someone who isn't particularly strong compared to the intruder?
