Is there any evidence that kids don't already pick based on what they enjoy more?
What's the issue with not sorting by gender?
I hope this doesn't change too much, shopping for my little brother doesn't need to take me on a grand journey across the entire store. Excited to see Barbie next to Pokemon though... not.
What's the issue with not sorting by gender?
Since stores don't do it already I must assume it has some disadvantage. Remember, I'm not arguing that stores SHOULD organize by gender. I'm arguing that there's no good reason not to if the business feels it is the most effective way.

times like these I really wish there was a "sure" rating Not as strong as agree but you know...
as i said earlier, it's up to the store. and i stand behind toys 'r us on this 100%
Remember, I'm not arguing that stores SHOULD organize by gender. I'm arguing that there's no good reason not to if the business feels it is the most effective way.
Well there is a reason; avoiding promoting prohibitive gender stereotypes. Whether you agree that it's a good reason or not is entirely up to you (and the store owners).

I'd hate to work at Toys R Us and have to re-arrange the entire store, but the internet isn't going to take that into account.
times like these I really wish there was a "sure" rating Not as strong as agree but you know...
Informative!

Informative!
who cares about the (relative to the effects) small amount of work required? once it's rearranged, it's done. it's an executive decision made by Toys 'r us, and that's all there is to it.

So if a business currently decides to do it a certain way I assume that is the best way they've found. Which is fine, they should be allowed to change what they want, but it isn't ideal.

Why would you ever put anyone through that
Inventory is literally hell on Earth. Why would you ever put anyone through that
I had to do inventory for a fast food restaurant for a couple years and even that small amount of stuff was a bitch to organize. I can't even imagine a massive store like Toy's R Us.

Why would you ever put anyone through that
they're going to be reorganizing stuff like that all the time. it's a somewhat large operation but it's only a one time thing, don't overblow it.
I had to do inventory for a fast food restaurant for a couple years and even that small amount of stuff was a bitch to organize. I can't even imagine a massive store like Toy's R Us.
Seriously! Fuck that.
they're going to be reorganizing stuff like that all the time. it's a somewhat large operation but it's only a one time thing, don't overblow it.
I'm half joking, but it seriously sucks. I think Toys R Us workers make minimum wage, and this is right before Christmas rush no less. I'd be pissed. The stores I work are tiny, I'd hate to be at Toys R Us. Edit: They do small things from time to time, but they rarely have to redo literally everything at once.
I suspect that as a student I will find myself in that position eventually due to inclinations of putting up with anything because of crippling debt.
Just asked my brother how he feels about this, and he's mad because it's going to be harder to find Skylanders and Pokemon now. Lmao
Inventory is literally hell on Earth. Why would you ever put anyone through that
yeah if i worked at toys r us right now suicide would be the only option. I condensed the children's clothes when I was working at a value village and that was just 5 racks of clothes. I'd kill myself if I had to reorganize a store.
so why didn't you shoot down gendered, but you feel compelled to shoot down the others? yes we can discuss to find new methods but you're showing a preference in what's better based on your views
Because it... kinda works. Not very well, mind you; but since it's been around for decades it's at least at a state where it can be organized without being a total train wreck, even if morally it's objectionable. It'll pretty much always end up that way because inventory's a really awful job and if you organize by brand similar stuff is gonna group together. The only way I can think to not have a gendered divide yet still keep everything where it should be is to let the distributors decide on what shelf space they want, but that'd have the side effect of making companies turn real sour on eachother real quick.
They are motherfucker. Target, Value Village, KB toys are three to name a few.
Well, I'm gonna tell you straight up that KB don't do it because they don't do anything. They closed up shop several years ago.
Well, I'm gonna tell you straight up that KB don't do it because they don't do anything. They closed up shop several years ago.
Target is massively gendered because most of the store is clothing separated into sections specifically labeled by age and gender.
Target is massively gendered because most of the store is clothing separated into sections specifically labeled by age and gender.
I'm JUST talking about the toys here. [editline]9th September 2013[/editline]
Well, I'm gonna tell you straight up that KB don't do it because they don't do anything. They closed up shop several years ago.
Well that explains why they're all gone.
I'm JUST talking about the toys here.
Maybe the Target by my house is different, but they have like 3-4 very short isles of toys. There really isn't room to organize by much of anything. I've actually noted to people how hard it is to find a specific type of toy at Target because it seems so disorganized.
Well that explains why they're all gone.
Yeah, they just kinda faded away. Only reason I know is because FunPub parodied them with their Machine Wars box set.
you guys are dumb, they never said they are rearranging anything, just not promoting gun toys directly to boys only and barbies / kitchen sets and that sort of thing to girls only, they will feature more gender-nuetral advertising, things will not be rearranged afaik.
you guys are dumb, they never said they are rearranging anything, just not promoting gun toys directly to boys only and barbies / kitchen sets and that sort of thing to girls only, they will feature more gender-nuetral advertising, things will not be rearranged afaik.
Then this is all pointless because Barbie will still be next to other dolls and similarly colored (girly) packaging.
I wanted an easy bake oven, fuck you.

I'm not sure how Toys R Us has any power over what advertising is made.
The people who make the products also make the advertising. I'm not sure how Toys R Us has any power over what advertising is made.
is it that hard to read the article, toys r us marketing won't be gendered
is it that hard to read the article, toys r us marketing won't be gendered
Here's a commercial from the 80's. I'm not quite sure what they would change. The very gendered stuff is from the toy makers, not Toys R Us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJJ-ZLdrTwY
