I feel that a business is in a better place to choose what is more effective for their business then social activists. So if a business currently decides to do it a certain way I assume that is the best way they've found.
I find this peculiar cause with this kind of thinking we wouldn't have the social groups that fought for worker's rights or minimum wages - so do you really think that we should allow corporations do to what they please?

If people stop shopping somewhere the business must change. Business is always a reflection of society, not a trend setter.
It's times like this I'm glad I've grown up. Being a kid now would suck balls, having to walk around looking for an action man in the barbie section.
Marking tries to FIND the audience., not CREATE the audience.
modern marketing is all about creating desire in people, not finding the people who want something.
seriously go learn your shit before you start spouting drivel about modern marketing. modern marketing is often scary good and scary powerful shit. the form of marketing used on kids has been honed to perfection and they have proven this with tests like the "nag book" and others.
we could fix this by not selling toys to little girls that teach them to be petty, fake, and all about the aesthetics.
Girls can have fun with colors other than pink.
Boys toys are practically all childrens toys besdies u know slugs and stuff.

So you're saying that Toys R Us is that business that must now change because of people complaining, which will eventually lead to them not buy there anymore if Toys R Us won't make changes?

Then why are you even arguing against this in the first place?
If people stop shopping somewhere the business must change. Business is always a reflection of society, not a trend setter.
the most profit can be had by selling things to people who want them, if you figured out you could create want, wouldn't you? oh right, that's modern marketing.
Here's a commercial from the 80's. I'm not quite sure what they would change. The very gendered stuff is from the toy makers, not Toys R Us.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJJ-ZLdrTwY
so the toy makers and toys r us and other large branded toy sellers won't have a dialogue with the people they buy toys from in order to achieve the best toys and profits?
The people who make the products also make the advertising. I'm not sure how Toys R Us has any power over what advertising is made.
What are you talking about?
Toys are us does a lot of their own advertising, especially through newspapers and coupons, and also they have their own website which they advertise stuff (which by the way they have separated into boys and girls toys which is part of the reason people have been getting them to change).

congratulations, your ignorant comment is solid proof that gender roles have severely affected the way you perceive things in your life

Implying that society doesn't affect everyone's perception of everything anyway.

"Brony culture"
Hold up I'm having a hard time typing with all this vomit in my mouth.
Everybody knows boys have the best toys anyway
I'd always feel bad for my niece when she got presents from the """girls""" isle, the toys there are so goddamn lame, its just tiny cooking kits and fake baby care
What kind of toy is that
No this is really stupid.
If we keep blurring the lines, we'll soon have bathrooms for both.
This is really just one of those "I have to complain because I gotta" things that shouldn't really matter.
People that complain like that are just annoying.

People who actually "complain cuz they gotta" are annoying, yes, and maybe they're the ones who influenced the decision to remove gender marketing. But even if they are is that so terrible? It's not gonna affect you or me (do you even shop at Toys R Us anymore?) if the shelves where GI Joe sits aren't labeled "Boys." The topic of gender and gender roles is an incredibly complex one and I'm not gonna pretend I'm an expert, but I think telling kids what they are supposed to like based on factors out of their control is what's stupid.
Implying that society doesn't affect everyone's perception of everything anyway.
no shit?
i never implied that and i have no idea why you even brought that up. this thread is about gender roles, so i'm talking about gender roles.
I'd like a snack called "gender rolls" where girls are strawberry and boys are blueberry. that'd be kickass.
i eat gender rolls for breakfast laom
It's probably because I'm a middle class white boy, but I never could understand why someone would want to play with barbies over something like lego when I was a kid.
I mean, you wanna play house, or you wanna build space ships?

My entire life I've thought segregated bathrooms are incredibly fucking stupid.
Especially when they're single person bathrooms. I always go into the women's in that case if someone is in the men's bathroom.
Why not just have two fucking bathrooms and not care who goes in them? The only difference is usually a condom machine and a changing station.
it wasn't really that a big deal that they were separated, but it's not a big deal that they're not either. who cares.

At Legoland we have a "Friends" store that sells the girl-themed Friends line of Lego. I have people complain to me about it pretty often, but I usually just tell them that literally every other store is gender-neutral. Then the little girls want the Friends sets, and I'm just left confused.
really quick if gender rolls are an actual thing people would go "gender roles suck!" but i'd be like "lmao dude they're tasty" and it'd be mad chuckles

Wait, do you work at legoland? Because if you do, holy shit that's awesome.

Yep! It's a pretty kickass job. :j
I do think that the gender binary in organization is a good thing, because, well, it's mostly status quo. I don't think that anyone who falls outside of that, child or adult, should be made fun of or disenfranchised in any way. So Toys R Us changing their advertisement strategies and policies sits well with me. However, a girl's section and boy's section (isle is not appropriate, I don't know of any store that has a single isle for either) makes sense. Though I would suggest that research be done to organize the sections to properly place the types of toys that boys and girls like on the border of the sections. An example being Lego, which are often played with by pretty much any child who grows up in a household that understands the concept of fun. If research indicates that boys and girls buy Lego equally, they should actually be the defining border. Coupled with proper labeling of isles, this solution could make everyone happy and it would be a logical way of doing things. An example of terrible placement would be what's done at a local Wal-Mart here. Barbie dolls take up one side of an entire isle, and Bratz dolls and other dolls make up the opposite side. Then, in the adjacent isle, it's cheaper dolls, and finally, you have model kits and model paint for some unexplained and mysterious reason. The opposite side of that isle contains various girl's playsets, and miscellaneous items usually attributed to a girl child's choice of toys. (ponies, fake cosmetics, etc)
Placing the model kits and associated items there makes literally no sense. Not only do girls never buy them (well, their parents never buy them because children usually don't have money) but most boys never buy them either. It's not only inefficient, but it can cause awkward social situations as parents with children shuffle by a strange man who's looking at little WWII planes he can build in his basement.
the matriarchy wins again
I'm perfectly okay with this - I mean really, how is it a bad thing? It's not like it's gonna have a huge impact, boys will still be boys and girls will still be girls, atleast for a long time.
This is a bad thing because the Tumblr social justice bloggers have turned a fucking toy store into a serious issue. Either they're going to have two different sections for toys as they already do but avoid the words "boy" and "girl" or it's going to combine them and shit will be difficult to find.

Goddamn Tumblr social justice bloggers trying to change society rather than maintaining the status quo, no matter what
imo having products separated by gender makes stuff easy to find, it's the parents fault for not letting their kid have what they want just because it's labelled for a girl/guy.

They're fucking annoying. It was okay to be a feminist back in the 50s/60s but now they just turn non-issues into issues. It's bullshit.
