This shit occurs in Japan just the same, the culture around anime obsession is surprisingly similar to in the west too. Of course just as you assume that all Japanese people are weird nerds, they make the same assumptions from this kind of stunt. I'd argue that we're weirder though. Use google translate and change 4chan into Japanese, then compare it to 2chan. Can't read either, and 4chan certainly looks a lot more insane.
