If you're buying hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth merchandise all devoted to a single fictional person, you're not a loser, you're completely mental.
Would it be pathetic if it was a bunch of expensive vintage sports/band memorabilia instead? Nah, then the guy is just dedicated to his hobby clearly.

I'm not gonna lie, I myself have 'fallen in love' with a virtual character, and I'm sure many of you guys have. Of course, this has never driven me to the point where I wanted to try to make it a reality with some shrine of sorts.
Isn't this a meme? I thought people set up these pictures as a joke. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/dinner-with-waifu-otaku-dates

If this is what the world is coming to, perhaps the mental health industry is more lucrative than I initially thought.
It's a joke with a reason. They watch a couple series and find a character with appealing characteristics. Written characters are meant to be interesting, so that's what people are attracted to (not necessarily sexually). Have you ever watched a cartoon on AS or CN and say "Man, I'd love to play video games with ___, he'd be a real bro"? They are aware that their favorite show's protag will never exist, so they collaborate with other likeminded individuals in their online community by pretending they're dating their character. It's all in good fun, but the purpose is deep-rooted in their admiration for good writing in animation. I'd wager that most of the pictures taken here are not by legitimately crazy people.

If we didn't fiction wouldn't even exist. It would just be a bunch of arbitrary crap that means nothing to us, because on some level, from some angle, we do see characters as people. In fact, I'll even go farther and say I understand infatuation with a character. [And then he goes on into disturbing levels about how he'd love to cuddle and hold Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4]
only 10-20% of these are real, about 50% are actual jokes, and everything in between wishes it was a joke but is actually real
Instead of seeking out a real relationship they try and have one with an imaginary "person" who doesn't exist. That's why. Get help.
Oh, get a relationship? Just get a relationship? Why don't I strap on my relationship helmet, and squeeze into a relationship cannon and fire off into relationship land, where relationships grow on little relationship trees!
only 10-20% of these are real, about 50% are actual jokes, and everything in between wishes it was a joke but is actually real
What about the other 40 - 30%?
Oh, get a relationship? Just get a relationship? And contrary to what many here would believe, it's not that hard.
[And then he goes on into disturbing levels about how he'd love to cuddle and hold Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4]
I love how he elaborated that he didn't hold her decapitated head, that just sounds like something straight out of a disturbingly violent sitcom.

I think the terms "waifu" and "husbando" shouldn't be taken seriously. I mean, I think most of them just call them that for the sake of saying that they find the character to be very attractive or to stand out than most fictional characters. In other words, it's just a joke. Most of the time, at least.
Is it a requirement that pretend girlfriends have to be anime?
Is it a requirement that pretend girlfriends have to be anime?
It's not mandatory no.
Try Ancient Greece.
proof that humanity hasn't really changed at all since antiquity. :v:
