Thanks for the boxes Jim.
Yes, well that's what happen when someone sells you what they claim is a retail edition of Win 7 only it turn out to be a business license.
Stuck in the same situation, yay. I guess we'll be a very small niche of people who actually bought windows 10.
"Cortana, delete System32" In all seriousness, I've pre-ordered my upgrade. This looks promising.
I really hope that you can actually install all language packs officially on Windows 10, getting Japanese language installed was such a pain in the arse on Windows 7 Home Premium. The program you need to do it isn't updated for Windows 8 and the list for Windows 8 on the Microsoft site doesn't list a version so it seems like it will work. It did install fine in the technical preview but that's Pro so who know.
How on earth is Linux superior.
Let's not start this discussion.
The fear that I have of upgrading, is that with a new installation, some of my hardware not work. I remember getting Windows 7 and having a real asshole of a time trying to get my Wifi PCI card to work. That and re-downloading a bunch load of games. Although.. What are the benefits of upgrading to Windows 10? Is it faster? Better performance for games? What is better in W10, that isn't in W7?
Let's not start this discussion.
Penguins is why it's better.
(User was banned for this post ("threadshitting" - UberMensch))
Might be off topic but Uber, this guy got pbanned on his alt not that long ago
Since nobody answered the question, how much will 10 cost to purchase normally?
Reminder that the superior GNU+Linux operating system does not require a key or calls to customer service to download and install. You simply download it and install it. Happy Hacking!
People like you are the kind of people that give the Linux community a bad name.
What is better in W10, that isn't in W7?
Better task manager, better multidisplay options, can mount ISO files out of the box, faster overall performance, better explorer. Those are just some of the few things I can remember off the top of my head. I think it uses less diskspace as well.
People like you are the kind of people that give the Linux community a bad name.
Don't feed the troll.
fuck, if only I could upgrade... PC likes to fuck itself and revert its changes every update, so I can't even get 8.1. I just want windows 10 so badly.

What is better in W10, that isn't in W7?
If honestly all you care about is games, then DirectX12 is only coming to windows 10. DX12 is what Mantle was going to be - a total strip down of the api, giving game engine devs near bare-metal access to the GPU. In real terms, this means more draw calls per second on the software side, so as long as your hardware can keep up means better framerates as the API is no longer the big bottleneck. There's lots more advantages to Win10, not to mention the Win8 and 8.1 enhancements that have carried over too, but do some research for yourself. As for hardware, as long as it's digitally signed now it'll work on Windows 10. Anything older will already be in the driver library and just install for you. If you do an upgrade your games should stay where they are - if they don't, they'll be in C:\Windows.old\Program Files - just move them back. Your saved games will be in C:\Windows.old\Users\<name>\Documents - or \Saved games or \AppData\Roaming or \AppData\Local (games are a pain in the ass for not standardising that) again, just move them back.
Windows is convinced my key isn't legit so I guess I can't get windows 10.
This happened to me once when I changed some hardware in my computer. Microsoft is very swift at fixing these things if you give them a call.
Since nobody answered the question, how much will 10 cost to purchase normally?
I don't think those numbers are out yet, but I assume it'd be similar to other Windows editions at launch.
Since nobody answered the question, how much will 10 cost to purchase normally?
No idea, but Windows 8 was $40 initially. If you're lucky, a similar deal will apply to Win10.
This happened to me once when I changed some hardware in my computer. Microsoft is very swift at fixing these things if you give them a call.
You can also use the phone activation, I had this problem too and activating with the phone fixed it.
Uhm, it doesn't format your drive or anything, it's just a big update in a sense. With Windows 10, Microsoft is kinda doing what Apple has done for a long time now where the OS gets new versions more frequently and the updates are free or very cheap. That's why they skipped Windows 9, because we're gonna call it Windows 10 for a long time.
Not sure if it was confirmed otherwise, but I'm fairly sure it was actually because of legacy coding from the likes of Windows 98 and such, that an OS called Windows 9 would have been a bit screwy. They just skipped to 10, and started riding the "oh, it can run on 10 different devices!" train.
Ugh I'm so split. On the one hand, I want to start fresh (and while we're at it allocate more space on C:), to get rid of leftovers and all that stuff. On the other hand, the button is there. Shiny. Free. Welcoming. No hassles about ISOs and whatnot.
no, that was a rumor thats very very wrong. you don't get an os version by getting the name, you get a version number.
Clearly missed the github links that said otherwise
Clearly missed the github links that said otherwise
all of that is java code that is actually terrible to begin with
Believe it or not, but Microsoft actually try to maintain backwards compatibility as much as is feasible. If these bad practices are still there and visible in searchable open source code, think of all the closed source programs that could be doing the same thing. Bear in mind Microsoft has a heavy business focus, and one thing businesses tend to do is continue to use extremely antiquated software because it "just works". Keeping legacy programs working is much more important to Microsoft than making sure the next version name is 1 digit higher than the last one.
From the win10 thread
New media

Mandatory xbox app bloatware isn't great but I'm excited for a new version after using Windows 8 for a year.
Actually, the built in game recording is really good, it's able to record most games with no preformance impact, and is the only way I can record them since my laptop has awful specs.
Actually, the built in game recording is really good, it's able to record most games with no preformance impact, and is the only way I can record them since my laptop has awful specs.
For professionals who use computers for not gaming though, it's essentially dead weight
all of that is java code that is actually terrible to begin with
Some of that was in the OpenJDK project if I remember (nobody uses this on Windows anyway). That must be some hellishly legacy code however.
