I'm not saying all of them are. I'm saying that the majority most likely are. Which is not good for anyone who is openly gay. And a majority of the ones that ARE homophobic would probably shoot a gay person if they thought they could get away with it.
and you can say that with any degree of certainty? the army people you met don't account for all of the people in the military

They were a pretty random sample, so I'm really unsure of whether they're an accurate representation of the sociopolitical environment in the military.

I'd say it probably varies by branch.. your average marine is a lot different than some nuclear physicist in the navy.
I've spoken to a shitload of enlisted personnel and two officers. One was an Apache Crew Chief and one was an Armored Platoon Commander in the army. Both were very bigoted, even though one hadn't even seen combat yet. When even the officers don't know better, things start to look kind of bad.

1+ million people in the military though
my brother is an officer and he's not a bigot therefore no one else in the military is :smug:
Instate a law that says not to mention any sexuality in the military.
Are you serious? Are you for real? If you're American, open your eyes and look around you. There's your citation.
Jesus, you act like you know fucking everything.Dude, it's 2010 not that many people* give a fuck if your gay anymore. You don't even live in the U.S., how can you keep generalizing like this?
*Besides my shitty ass southeast and southern part of the U.S.
As a 18 year Vet of the Army and the Infantry Core , this makes me sick to my stomach , I cant wait to see how the ground force reacts to this. The military is not a place for Gays and will cause nothing but trouble when this is past. So call me what you want , I have 6 deployments under my belt for my county how about you ?
Woah better reconsider this an old man is bitching

He learned a lot about discipline, sacrifice, and brotherhood. But he didn't learn the difference between a country and a county.

My brother is in the Navy and he said that most people at his base are relatively indifferent to this. Most of the talk that's going around is that comrades are comrades, and you got to help each other out no matter what.
Your blind Canadian nationalism is also abhorring. You can't just generalize an entire group of people just because of a few shitheads that you've seen and talked to. You don't see me saying, "The majority of Canadians are jackasses and useless cow-humpers because all I saw was a bunch of hicks up there."

I agree but you really should also be calling out the blind American nationalism which is much more prevalent on these forums.
Are you aloud to tell people you are straight?

He says a couple of Americans Officers are bigots, and apparently that means he's a Canadian nationalist.
Are you aloud to tell people you are straight?
No you can't say it aloud you have to whisper or write notes.
He says a couple of Americans Officers are bigots, and apparently that means he's a Canadian nationalist.
he said most of the people in the military are homophobes.. and yes he basically is a nationalist if you've read his posts. he even has a Canadian avatar.
he's the Canadian version of BurnEmDown except he's not dumb (nationalism is dumb but you get my point. no one's as retarded as BurnEmDown except for people like Glaber.)
I'm saying that the majority most likely are.
Regarding his posts in general, he is kinda nationalistic

Honestly, I read and lurk a lot of threads, and I'm actually surprised I don't see blind American nationalism a lot more here. However, I'm against any sort of blind nationalism where one country is viewed better simply because of Chinese whispers.

Never mind the fact that he brags about Canada in a lot of his posts and has the maple leaf as his avatar. Nope, definitely not a nationalist.

Apart from the bit about social freedoms at the very beginning, I really haven't mentioned Canada in this thread with regards to my arguments, so please don't bring it into the picture.

that's not the only post you've made..
:cawg:
This was unexpected. Appreciated, it's about fucking time, but very unexpected.
Fox news totally thinks it should be repealed
Holy fuck.

Just a question; being that you're a Canadian(so I assume you live in Canada and not the U.S.), how have you met so many U.S. Military personnel? More so, did you just randomly walk up to soldiers and go "how do you feel about gays in the military". I'm just interested in how you went about meeting so many soldiers and then asking them about how they felt about them.
I for one wouldn't feel comfortable about talking to a guy I had only just met about my political viewpoints.

Friends of friends on visits to the USA. And since my friends are political by nature, the conversation often turned in that direction. At the time I'd been very fascinated by the US military and asked a lot of related questions as well.

You're probably right, but in the context of that post, it didn't come off as very nationalistic to me.

He said he was fine unless they hit on him.
After that conversation, I started hitting on him.

anecdotal experiences with soldiers who were bigots = majority of people in the military are bigots
my county
Haha.
I've spoken to a lot of Americans online.
The majority were atheist, are most Americans atheist?
