.22 Caliber rifles are popular with Kids... I don't know if it's because the size of the round tricks people into thinking it's less dangerous or what. But the fact is, Long Rifles and Shotguns don't require any permits of any kind and you can walk into Wal mart, And Buy one, and walk out in 15 minutes, they do an On the Spot background check and that's that. Obviously you have to be over 18 to buy one, But a lot of parents for some reason buy their kids these things. People who shouldn't touch a Firearm because they're completely clueless as to how one should be treated.
My mom has a neighbor who bought their kids, about 10-12 .22's... Glad I don't live anywhere near them
Also, don't Red Flags ever pop up when your kid is an untrustworthy dipshit brat that shouldn't be near a gun?

It's because the guns can be smaller, and they have less recoil.
Yea, you try getting a small 10 year old boy to fire a shotgun with a slug loaded into it by himself and you will see why these people would get a kid a .22 instead.
[editline]4th January 2011[/editline]
Also the reason why shotguns and long rifles are easier to get is because they are tools mainly for hunting. Handguns(revolvers excluded, since they are also a novelty hunting weapon like bows) are pretty much only for personal defense. It's the purpose of the gun that is important.
Only in America you'll hear of parents giving their 10 year old kids guns
lol

Why is this a bad thing? A child is well equipped(generally) to learn gun safety and responsibility with responsible parents.
hmm, last post didnt register.
Its safe to assume .22 are lower powered and then thus safer for children, as its a true fact. .22 is a very small and very low energy round and due to that it is less dangerous, but that being said that doesn't mean it isn't capable of causing lethal injuries at close range; just as a knife is a low powered weapon, but can still cause lethal injuries.
Had the kid shot his mother with a 12 gauge, .223, or .308 she would be a lot more dead than she is now, if you catch my drift. It really varies on the person who gets shot and where he shot them, anyways.. While his mum died there are plenty of people who probably would have survived, she was probably taken by surprise which definitely would have increased her chances of dying because she was relaxed and getting shot was an immense shock.
the world would b a better place wit no guns man

Letting the kid "play" with the gun by keeping it within his reach was a bad idea. No matter how well trained the kid is, leaving a gun in his room is just a lousy idea for many, many reasons.

Hypno, you might be a bit more knowledgable than me about guns. I heard the a .22 is actually more deadly with a headshot than other guns of larger caliber. The line of thinking has always been that .22 doesn't actually penetrate all the way through the head so it creates more damage inside when the bullet mushrooms out or explodes or whatever the technical term is, while a heavier caliber gun will go through and exit out the other side so it causes relatively low damage.
It's off topic, but I wanted to know what you thought about that.

Yes, but that's why I said with responsible parents. This wasn't one of the situations where the kid had a responsible parent.
Was more adding onto your post. Its okay to let kids use guns, but its only "safe" when its under the supervision of a responsibile adult, so leaving the gun within the child's unsupervised reach is just asking for trouble, even if the kid has had proper gun training. At that age even good training still requires good supervision.

Im not sure about that, to be honest that jsut sounds like an urban myth. I heard that on CSI, so i cant help but refute it as false since almost everything on that show is. Its probably where it came from.
Mythbusters should test it :buddy:

None of this really matters, Any bullet hitting ones head means death. There's few cases where this didn't happen but those are mainly failed attempts of suicide where the face was blown into atoms or the bullet ricochet from a bone and came out such a passage that it didn't cause death.
Anyhow, A gunwound bleeds so fast that the caliber doesn't really matter. This is why the calibers should be threated as same when talking about gunwounds. The only thing that matters in the non-crisis time is did the bullet penetrate all way through, Did it hit a bone and ricochet from a bone. The caliber only matters because of the size of the hole. But if the bullet hits on a big blood vessel it doesn't matter much in the terms of medical condition the target person will be in.
For example
If a bullet hits you in the waist area, there's nothing that can be done. Actually the only thing that you should do in case like this is to push the waist down from the side to push down the broken bones thus creating more massive bleeding. This results in almost instant death.

It's just personal preference. It's no different then my .22 on the bottom. How is that ridiculous? I just think it looks better. Sort of like how a girl would think a pink stock would look better.

If they want it pink because they think it looks better, why not let them have it that way?
I don't have any problem with a parent giving their kid a small-caliber gun like this for Christmas, but come the fuck on. I wouldn't trust the gun itself be unlocked, much less actual ammunition.

Yeah that's usually the case with most of the killings similar to this one. Lack of parental responsibility.
Ive been shooting and lived around unlocked guns since I was born. Only idiots don't teach their kids about proper gun safety.
And he must've had an intent to kill her, I've fired a .22 myself, those things are pea-shooters with pretty small stopping power.
A .22 round will penetrate the skull and then bounce around within it because it doesn't have the power to go through and through, thus causing massive internal damage.
More likely a lack of proper gun safety, rather than cold-blooded murder. Even if you trust a ten-year-old to manage a gun, it's still a bad idea to leave it loaded and just lying around. If he got the gun for Christmas, I wouldn't be surprised if he was fiddling around with it when his mom came in, didn't know it was loaded/had the safety off/banged it too hard/pretended to shoot her and had it accidentally discharge when she was leaving.
This is why you always treat every gun like it's loaded, and has a bad safety switch and a hair trigger.
And he must've had an intent to kill her, I've fired a .22 myself, those things are pea-shooters with pretty small stopping power.
Any gun has the potential to be lethal. Guns are designed to kill. The size of the bullet doesn't matter.
Only in America.

it's not
a gun is ones own and it can be personalized anyway one wants, like a car for example
if you want to do nothing to your gun than go ahead but don't judge other people

This. I actually received a rifle as a present, courtesy of my parents.
It really depresses me, considering the fact that the chance of the mom being a dumbass is pretty low. She probably held an immense trust in her child, enough to warrant the purchase of a firearm.
