• OH SHIT, SON! The FCC just redefined broadband to be 25Mbps and up. ISPs pissed as hell, Republicans

yep, it's unmetered. the only restriction is they'll throttle you down to 75% during peak hours. they can afford to do that because literally nobody on earth does max speed transfers for a month straight

Really though, the future of the internet is it being treated like infrastructure, it should inherit the price modelling you expect in a DC, the way you pay for power, stuff like that; you have a connection fee and then you pay for what you use. Strange now I just got a letter from twc, saying if I give them an extra 50$ and buy a cable box I can get speeds up to 50Mb/s Oddly they left out broadband in the letter, if I remember correctly when I signed up in august, they only offered internet up to 25 Mb/s in my area and it cost exactly 50$ more than what I'm getting!

As if it's not already too late.
My download speeds have peaked at 200 kb/s before. That's about as good as it gets around here. We had a specialist come in to check out our speeds and he said it was totally normal. Apparently not, though. I see posts on here all the time of people who are bitching and complaining that they only get 5 mb/s or something and it pisses me off. Ohhhhh noooo, it takes just under an hour to download a gaaaame. Man, bite me. It takes days on my end.
I jumped from 75 KB/sec max to FiOS back in the day. I still regard "a couple hours" as insanely fast for a game download, when I used to have to pull two overnight sessions to download Left 4 Dead
Unless you have an SLA that specified you actually have an unmetered connection, you have a softcap. No seriously, every major ISP has a soft cap, it might be high (<=10TiB), but if you pass it you will get a call. Seriously, I dare you to upload and download at your max speed for a whole month, you'll get a call barely 1/3 into the month.
Some people like me use a lot of data
That's not even that high tbh.
I actually remember when our family used a whole 2 GB a month. No limit, that's just all we used. This was back when HD video over the internet was still a novelty. And we only had 3 PCs.

I couldn't even play online games because of the lag.
That's not even that high tbh.
Yeah, I just checked my usage and I've averaged about 320GB/month. And I barely even download stuff like I used to

I could easily go over 1TB in data a month; that's why I was super pissed when Comcast decided to implement a monthly cap for everyone. I pretty much stream all of my media; whether it be Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Twitch, etc.. I also at the time had roommates doing the same. The lack of ISP options bothers me; apparently Google Fibre is coming to the Atlanta area; so I'm hoping I live within their serviceable range.
once Google Fiber goes all to the cities and town's Comcast will have to get there shit tougher.
so when does this take effect? my 'broadband' is only like 8mb/s
It used to be a nightmare having a 6mbps connection. You can't even stream Neflix super HD with that. I'd go as far and say 50mbps is the minimum for a family.
i always die a bit instead when see people complaining about their 'slow' connection speeds when the majority of australia has to deal with under 1mbps connections boy does our internet suck
When should I start calling AT&T asking when they are going to upgrade me to "broadband" for free?
http://www.wired.com/2015/02/fcc-chairman-wheeler-net-neutrality/ Tom Wheeler has put out a proposal to put the internet under Title II(late but he wrote the above article himself, it pretty much confirmed now).
The Obama Nation: ...One Nation... ...under sharia... ...with Lieberty and Social Justice for all... ...especially our friends
oh man my brain cells they're all over the floor
I hope Wheeler's ready to bring that Title II rate regulation hammer down if the big ISPs don't stop acting like dicks and jacking up prices for no reason. Google Fiber's gonna be able to roll out like gangbusters if Title II makes it, though, because then it'll be able to demand access to the poles to string up its own network. And then we're gonna see the big ISPs shit themselves and either find a way of competing...or they'll try and take Google to court over bullshit. Probably taking Google to court over bullshit.
Any time the GOP is freaking the fuck out and trying to counter-legislate something, you can be pretty confident the thing being proposed is beneficial for the country.
Well to give a fair insight: I regularly work from home, and have 6 computers at home and 3 people here. I used 9TB last month. My overal over 2014 was 81TB
Jesus even running at full speed 24/7 I wouldn't be able to use that much in a year.
