Im sure this only refers to forty year old men who play world of warcraft and live with there parents.
basically what happened when i came in this thread:
"British-"
this article isn't credible
What a stupid thing to say.
What a stupid thing to say.
no i don't think so it comes with reading a million articles noting "oh yeah they're british just so you know, here's obvious 5-second study of the day"
The internet doesn't really cause depression but it definately doesn't help it.

dumb
Only the weak are depressed.
I get it and I'm 14.
hence the 'most'
They got paid for this?
evidence of a link between excessive internet use and depression
:smithicide:
Isn't this usually because the 'excessive' internet users don't go outside and hence become depressed that way? I try to strike a balance between the two.
I agree with the study. Ever since I started limiting the amount of time I spend on the Internet, I've found myself much happier than before.
excessive internet use does not lead to depression, depression leads to excessive internet use
Only the weak are depressed.
And you're in denial.
Fuck that, the internet is one of the few things keeping me sane!
hell no, I can't live without internet
Maybe because people who are extremely depressed go to the internet, instead of people get depressed by using the internet.
Just a thought.
O man I'm so depressed!
It's ok, we feel your pain.
But they have it the wrong way around!
Depressed people are probably depressed because they're lonely or because they don't like themselves. If you're lonely and don't like yourself, you're probably going to spend more time indoors, and then if you're indoors all the time you'll probably wind up on the internet. Hence depressed people tend to use the internet more!
Hm...on rereading the article it seems they've sort of conceded that but still - 1,319? I think a larger sample size is required.
They found a correlation, which doesn't imply causation. Most news articles about scientific studies ignore this.
So somebody like :foxnews: will say that using the Internet makes you depressed, which hasn't been proved at all.
Most of fp will recognize it if they're shown the more recent look:

They have addressed this though, they're simply saying "linked to"
but what we don't know is which comes first – are depressed people drawn to the internet or does the internet cause depression?" the article's lead author, Dr Catriona Morrison, said.
Yep.
I think depressed people go to the internet. That's what I did. Also, there is NO ONE on my block that I can hang with, therefore I have to use the internet.
hey guys i heard breathing air is linked to dying

Get a car you hippie
Correlation does not equal causation.
I'm considered clinically depressed, and have been since way before I started using the internet. If anything, internet makes me happier.
also: my mother, father, grandmother on both sides, and grandfather on my mother's side are all also considered clinically depressed. Go figure.

Hippy? No. 16? No.
I was lonely being locked up in my house(protective parents you know) so I joined the internet.

They should do a study on this.
