Soderbergh is on board, and Bullock called it "an extension and a continuation." We won't know for sure until more details are released, but it doesn't seem like it's just a "let's remake a classic crime film with women this time," it seems like it could easily be in-universe with the rest of the Ocean's series. Gender-swapping has been a "trend" since Shakespearean times. When it's done well, it can actually be great. It just doesn't work when you piss all over the original IP and insult your core fanbase - since Soderbergh is involved with the project, I very much doubt they'll do that. But we'll see. Bullock seems to have a lot of respect for the IP and she has the original director of the Ocean's trilogy on board - that's radically different from the Ghostbusters situation.

Taking a movie with an all or mostly male cast and making a sequel with an all female cast just screens pandering, even if it isn't.
