Infinity Ward: Making a new game other than Call of Duty would be "the easy way out"

I want Modern Warfare 4, please Activision.
Does this spell the end of Call of Duty or is Call of Duty MW27 going to be a thing?
people care as much about CoD as you do about Half Life
once you let that sink in what he's saying makes a whole lot more sense really
its like you literally can't read any of the posts above

too bad infinity ward is an activision subsidiary
yeah cool they make a lot of money on it, therefore it makes sense to stay on it
its like you literally can't understand that I think it's bullshit that they act like its harder to strive away from it. It's not that its profitable, its that it can't be THAT hard to do something else
I wouldn't be doing the same series over and over if I was a dev, that's boring as fuck. IW does the same game series every year. Yeah, its a fun game, but they already have the formula down, its just a matter of recreating it. Yeah, they are all updated versions of the last, but they will always be "moderately more acceptable than the last". And while that may be enough to get a lot of new sales, I just don't feel like they're being entirely honest.
It would likely be easier to do something new. It doesn't have to be as successful, but because of how it's likely more fun to do something else it'll be easier.
and, they're a joke because, it really feels like they are bullshitting. It's smarter to stick with it, even though its easier, is what I think. But they should at least TRY something else. If they did something else and went back to cod 2-3 years after they would likely have a way, way better call of duty.
The only CoD I liked was world at war maybe it's because it had that zombie game mode and maps. I only like zombies and possibly the campaign but multiplayer on this is not good. Anyways holy shit the fans... they need to learn respect and "To try something new".
Guys guys guys, surely he got his words mixed up, he probly meant making another Call of Duty was the easy way out...
Right?
Infinity Ward is like the polar opposite of Nintendo: instead of taking risks and experimenting with new games, they stick with the same series all the time every time and never change.

it would be incredibly hard to do something different while still getting the same (or even close) (or even remotely close) amount of revenue
Infinity Ward is like the polar opposite of Nintendo: instead of taking risks and experimenting with new games, they stick with the same series all the time every time and never change.
I can't hear you, I'm playing new super mario bros.
it would be incredibly hard to do something different while still getting the same amount of revenue
and that's the point
it would be hard for them to get the same about of money, but better for them to "Get out and do something else", easy to make the game, hard to get the same profit.
they wouldn't make as much money yes, but they don't have to abandon CoD. Just "Refresh"

"wouldn't make as much money" sounds very mild until you lose your job over it
"wouldn't make as much money" sounds very mild until you lose your job over it
if they do the game right they'd still make more than enough I'm sure but yeah, sticking to one series can't be as fun as a new project
people could lose jobs if they fuck up a new game, but, isn't that what being a dev is all about? making new games and tech?
Call of duty sucks Battlefield is better.
Sorry an original comment would be too easy to think up.
I suggest all of you read the article considering that journalists (and thread creators here on FP) have a thing for taking what Mark Rubin says out of context.

job security is kind of a big fucking deal with today's economy, especially in the volatile game industry.
For those that think IW is just being dumb, let's put it into terms more of FP is bound to understand.
You can't experiment that much as a developer. If something isn't a guaranteed success nowadays, even in other forms of media, it will never get greenlit, fans will hate it, and the franchise will be destroyed.
Shit analogy
Valve has made nothing but new titles for the past few years. No backlash, no lost profits.
Half Life 2 came out in 2004 m8

which is also a good reason why it's easier to just stick to CoD, but that doesn't mean they can't work on other things as well

preorders (xbox1 only, ps4 didn't even have titanfall on the list)
Call of Duty: Ghosts - 229,628
Titanfall - 27,956
10% of revenue sure as hell isn't "more than enough"
and no, being a dev isn't all about the constant fear of losing your job if your studio makes a "bad game"
it's also not about making new games and tech considering how most of the AAA workforce just does exactly what they're told to do from a game document
which is also a good reason why it's easier to just stick to CoD, but that doesn't mean they can't work on other things as well
yes it does mean they can't work on other things as well
which is also a good reason why it's easier to just stick to CoD
yeah. sticking to a franchise that sells very well regardless of variation between titles is very reasonable, despite how much pc gamers hate it because "hurp durp a game i'll never play is always the same and therefore not fun."
if any of you read the article (lol) rubin says how IW worked on some dungeon crawler diablo fun as a little experiment. having a little fun like that is a good way to not get burnt out on a single project, which might be an issue in iw's offices.

being afraid of losing your job because of a bad game doesn't happen as often as many may think. the only time there's mass layoffs in the industry is if the publisher is dying, or if the developer has consistently wasted money or made games that sell horribly. a single title, especially from a successful publisher like IW, won't do that.
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut people may not want to buy an IW title if it's not call of duty. if activision gives a new title a call of duty budget and it tanks, then people are getting fucked.

yeah but the problem isn't making a game so horrible that they lose money, the problem is that IW making anything other than Call of Duty may as well be a waste of time considering the money they could be making with Call of Duty
yeah but the problem isn't making a game so horrible that they lose money, the problem is that IW making anything other than Call of Duty may as well be a waste of time considering the money they could be making with Call of Duty
yeah, and it's not viable to have yet another developer step in to make a cod game while IW makes a different title
they aren't going to go out of business if they don't make CoD Jesus Christ
and making another game doesn't = abandoning CoD
but the fact they say it'd be harder to say with CoD seems like its just acting as if it is hard to stick with a series that basically sells no matter how bad it is or isnt. That doesn't mean they can do other things. Tons of devs don't stick to their main game and come out perfectly fine.
If they truly are resourceful they'd be able to make something other than Call of Duty.
yeah, and it's not viable to have yet another developer step in to make a cod game while IW makes a different title
Jesus Christ lol
yes it is, and fans can go without CoD for a year. they made so much money they wouldn't lose THAT much trying something else.
yeah, and it's not viable to have yet another developer step in to make a cod game while IW makes a different title
They do have like 4 studios making Call of Duty games.
Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer, and n-Space.
And again, I feel like I should point out that if they stop making CoD titles, Activision stops funding them. It's not like they have any say in the matter whatsoever.

i sure wouldn't miss out on millions of dollars just to cater to an audience that hates my games anyways

what's with pc gamers and wanting big AAA publishers to make games that pander to themselves and not them.
they probably won't play them anyways lol

I don't care if they make it cater to ME, I'm just saying they should try something else. It sounds like you're twisting words for some reason
also "Whats with PC gamers"
lol, I've played so many console games, idie games, and pc games, why am I labeled purely as "arrogant PC gamer"
i sure wouldn't miss out on millions of dollars just to cater to an audience that hates my games anyways
millions doesn't = dying out
and what if they make something that makes them BILLIONS of dollars?
its called taking a risk

springboarding off of you, because there are a ton of people who unironically say that infinity ward would be better off if they made games that pandered to me me me

well fuck those people
I just don't like the idea of doing only 1 series, even if it is easier that way. they could make a game about shitting off of a bridge onto cars for all I care. They only seem to stay with CoD because it makes sense and its the most profitable, but what happens when CoD isn't cool any more? They will be fucked because they never tried to do anything else. They never released a game unlike CoD, never tried to take any real risks. They don't like risks, and they can't make Call of Duty forever. They HAVE to run out of ideas eventually for the game.
I really loved MW1 and MW2 but I'm afraid to get back into CoD because next year there will just be another one to buy
They do have like 4 studios making Call of Duty games.

I believe most Activision studios (some don't exist now) are working on the CoD series in some way, shape or form. They don't seem to put out much else other than CoD so they must be doing something.
