They've just announced they're shutting down and will no longer be making anything more:
Just moments ago, Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli producer, announced on the TV show of the MBS Jounetsu Tairiku chain effectively as announced as sources close to the studio, Studio Ghibli will close and production studio anime, leaving himself only as a company that will manage its trademarks. As stated in the program's producer, "the production department of anime will be dismantled," which coincides with the data that we gave in our previous post on this decision had been taken from spring after the poor reception at the box office of Kaguya-hime no Monogatari. In the interview, Suzuki has also admitted that it was a major setback for the study progress Hayao Miyazaki*, one of the reasons already unveiled the portal Rakuten Woman. Once we have access to the full TV interview, adding more data. No doubt that this is a very sad news for Japanese animation, of which we are all fans, because it is undeniable everything Studio Ghibli has given the anime. Please remember that what will be his last film, Omoide no Marnie, premiered at the Japanese box office on 19 July." (*Note: this seems like a mistranslation. We assume that "study progress" is meant to say "studio to lose.")
http://oh-totoro.com/post/93700803450/studio-ghibli-announces-closure-toshio-suzuki
Studio Ghibli's founder Hayao Miyazaki retired last year after finishing his final film, the Oscar-nominated The Wind Rises, handing the studio over to Suzuki, who retired from producing to become the general manager. Before his retirement, Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli crated some of the most beloved and iconic 2D animated films of the past thirty years including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and many more.
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=121379 Well that's really shitty. I watched a bunch of their films when I was a little kid. Sucks to hear they couldn't pull through.
Kill la Kill is an odd case. Early on it plays it for all it's worth and then it just kind of stops and becomes a fact of life. Eventually you just stop noticing and eventually it's barely even notable because everybody ends up naked at one point or another.
too bad real life isn't like that
I had never heard of Studio Ghibli until I played Ni No Kuni on PS3. It has a fantastic story and may be perhaps the best game I've ever played. Everything in it from the characters, the humor(puns puns puns), the fantastic music, and the gameplay itself just made me happy. I haven't seen their movies yet but it's something that definitely needs to happen.
It was a good run, it's for the better
IMO Miyazaki pretty much was Studio Ghibli.
Much of Toho's special effects productions were turned upside down after Tsubaraya's death. They relied on him so much. Probably repeating here.
Wow this is sad. Their movies are unique.
what the fuck man, i literally started rewatching all their films yesterday and now this happens out of the blue. princess mononoke and grave of the fireflies are my 2 favourite movies. that's really unfortunate.. at least there's still a couple i haven't seen yet
Thread music ;_; I happen to be wearing this t-shirt right now, by coincidence. Thank you, Studio Ghibli, for making magic. For stories that thrilled me with daring and audacious adventures, for stories that made me feel great ranges of emotion that I didn't expect to feel from animated pictures, for stories that made me think and reflect on the world and my place in it.
The music is perhaps my favorite part of Studio Ghibli stuff. Joe Hisaishi is a genius.
I only know Spirited Away man, what a CLASSIC. Absolutely should rewatch.
Holy shit no... Their movies were so damn good.
spirited away is the one movie that makes me feel like a little kid again arguably the best animated movie of all time imo
K, i'm going to be that guy. This is the very first time i'm hearing about these guys.
this is real sad gonna have a marathon of their movies this week then
I want to believe that they're simply in hiatus while some freelance artists/producers come to Ghibli for consulting, but maybe that's too hopeful.

And that you will, soon. Fun fact: The cigarette band around Yubaba's cigarettes have a Totoro motif (the little white guys), but it's basically only big enough to see in theatres, and it's only on screen for quick moments.
UPDATE: They're shutting down.
Well, all good things come to an end, I guess.
K, i'm going to be that guy. This is the very first time i'm hearing about these guys.
Then I'd highly suggest watching the films. I'm not really big on Anime as a genre (except for the few exceptions like Dragon Ball) but the Ghibli films are on a different level compared to those.

Studio Ghibli transcended any judgements and stereotypes people may have about Anime: Not even the people who detract all anime as schoolgirls with huge tits bouncing around speak badly of Ghibli's movies. It's really really sad to see them go, but I'd rather they end on a high note instead of degrading into nothingness.

End of an era.
This always makes me scratch my head given how most of the Ghibli movies are just pretty standard farce children movies with some cool creature designs added on top of them.
Princess Mononoke is a pretty great childrens movie.
Well fuck.

This is upsetting
I haven't seen a single one of their movies, but I understand and appreciate their impact. Maybe I should watch them all now as a sort of belated 'farewell'. Hmmm.
spirited away is the one movie that makes me feel like a little kid again arguably the best animated movie of all time imo
Eh, I thought Spirited Away was kind of overrated (albeit still good). I'm more of a Nausicca fan, myself.
Man. Despite all the Ghibli love I still hate Grave of the Fireflies.
(albeit still good)
The universal appeal of the movie makes it pretty great.
