You probably won't be able to customize the sounds since those would have to respect regulations, maybe you'll be able to pick from a few options though.

Regulations mean nothing if the police are too busy laughing their asses off to notice your escape.

I beg to differ.

You can't beat this for a car slowly moving along the side of a road.
I remember expecting this to happen back when I first saw an electric car like ten years ago.
EVs are weird to drive because of the engine noise being absent. I worked for a high end auto dealer when I was younger, sometimes I'd wonder if I had started the car at all.
Probably will help keep the driver awake over long trips.

I hope that the audio picks up where it left off when you stop.

God damn, why are these people all so angry? This is amazing!
We need to make a law mandating that electric taxis blast the Offspring as their sound.
I seem to remember reading about doing this a while back, is surprising to me that it is only coming into effect now.
I know here that sound is needed to know when cars are coming due to living on hills and blocked views from parked cars, so it's not surprising it's being implimented in the states.
Time for the whistle tip sound to back into fashion.

I wonder if gasoline engines will eventually have to produce a minimum amount of noise. My Mazda is nearly silent at low RPM.
I'm actually genuinely amazed this hasn't been a thing since day one. When designing these cars, I would imagine one of the biggest talking points amongst the people designing and building them would be "Hey, these things are super quiet you know!" - seems surprising they didn't think to make them do something like this from day one.
But... perhaps it's just a case of not wanting to do something they didn't HAVE to, as it may have harmed the 'cool factor' in owning an electric car if it's constantly buzzing or whirring or making silly embarassing fake engine sounds at low speed, ie; the speed that everyone will stop and stare at you around.
I'm all for it!
This is going to make electric cars less appealing, unless someone figures out how to make it sound like a gasoline engine.
And yet is totally necessary, should have been mandatory from the getgo. Hell, some modern pure ICE cars are so fucking quiet they should also have it for the same reasons. I've been right nearby cars that were running and, unless their cooling fan was cycling, I couldn't tell the damned thing was running.

Even my late 90s Ford Escort ecobox is pretty damn quiet for what it is. At idle, standing outside your not hearing the engine exhaust, but the faint vibration of the engine and the cam moving. In fact, its louder inside from the lack of insulation then it is outside. And that engine is just an 80s era design Ford with a computer on it.
Modern small engines might as well be electrics unless they are going full bore.
I wanna give mine the SNES Mario Kart engine sound
what you need is a specialised trumpet that takes oncoming air and toots it
[editline]15th November 2016[/editline]
at speeds which do not activate the trumpet, a klaxon blares

imagined a trump supporter flatulating at high speed and then an alien roaring
Id pick me going 'vroeeeeeeeeem vroeeeeeeem' or maybe mario cart theme song <3
This sounds bad but is actually very reasonable imo...
