I can't imagine a noise that wouldn't get annoying. Especially in heavy traffic. And using fake petrol engine sounds is only going to make EVs feel like battery powered toys that need sound effects to be like real cars.

I hope the sounds will be customizable at least, if my EV has to make noises I want it to sound like an idling jet or some other sci-fi spaceship thing and not just a stupid fake ICE
This rule might be worth extending to some ICE cars as well, these days they tend to be soundproofed to the point where the tires make more noise than the car at low rpms.

At the Pikes Peak Hill Climb last year, there were probably a dozen electric cars. Most had sirens, but one had the Jetsons car sound. By far my favorite.

I imagine, with enough pressure/demand, companies can set a "custom sound" mode to the car that would, by law/regulation/whatever, only be allowed in certain areas (i.e. race tracks and private property).
Of course, police chases would become a lot more interesting. At least hacking the software to be able to customise it won't be as useful/dangerous.
