Not to sound like an arsehole, but depending on the range I'd have fired. The L85 is accurate enough, and as we saw the guy could easily have been dead if the AK was a degree or two in a different direction. Although it depends to what extent the civilian was actually covering the insurgent. If he was crouched behind the civilian, then fairs, but if he was stood up and was relatively exposed I wouldn't want to hesitate, because that's a position to fire from.
This is going to come across horrible. Apologies in advance before anyone calls me a heartless (insert generic expletive here).
While this little girl's life may indeed have been saved, and that's all fine and dandy, civilian casualties are unavoidable and sometimes necessary. What if a whole bunch of ragheads attacked a NATO base holding little kids in front of them? What if they did this every time? If all the soldiers threw down their weapons or refused to shoot, the entire base would get slaughtered. Sometimes you've got to shoot back even when civilians are at risk, or you might as well not bother fighting at all. This is why I respect Israel and the IDF: they don't let people using human shields deter them in a warzone. And you shouldn't, unless you like losing, of course.
Another thing that bothers me is that Middle Eastern culture views women badly, to say the least - I'd rather be dead from a missed shot than alive as a woman in that hellhole. As harsh as it may sound, he probably should've gone forward with the shot anyway. It would've been more merciful than living in the horrors to come when the country reverts after a total withdrawl - the women, whatever status they may have gained so far, will end up being stepped on again further down the road after we're gone.

This is exactly what I was talking about, insurgent tactics entail using dirty practices, because its really the only way to be effective when facing armored vehicles, bombers, and helicopters. But actually picking up a girl to use as a shield during a firefight, that's just so despicable it's almost comical.
