i think the coldplay hate comes from how their style has been imitated and genericized into being used for product demo videos and such

I think that's probably the reason right there. The reason I dislike Coldplay is because their music is pretty bland mallrock, and they use really generic chord progressions. I mean R.E.M. and Travis essentially did what Coldplay did but a lot better and with a lot more authenticity

First track off the first album is still their best song. First album was great, second was good, third meh and it all kinda went downhill from there.

That's the problem, they are so inoffensive that they appeal to everybody. They're not bad, arguably, they're not good but I think everyone can agree that bland entertainment just sucks.

Given a ticket to one of their gigs, I'd probably go. Would I enjoy it? Maybe a bit, they put on a good live act but they're definitely not one of my choices and I feel sorry for anyone where Coldplay is the one live act they want to see before they die.
