In all honesty, tobacco is about as dangerous as weed. Which is not very.
In pure form, no shit.
Its the additives that tobacco companies put in it that makes it harmful
[editline]2nd March 2012[/editline]
Actually tobacco naturally contains nicotine which is what makes it physically addictive, so no, its not as harmless as weed.
I don't see how this is violating free speech, they aren't stopping cigarette companies from putting any labels on in the other areas.
There are far more effective ways to stop kids from smoking:
I will never understand smoking, it has virtually no benefits.
neither does ice cream, but a lot of people still enjoy it
The tobacco companies are lucky they are still able to sell these dangerous products in the first place. People need to be educated that they are dangerous if they are still being sold, period. It may not be as obvious to some people. If however, people still choose to start despite knowing, can't say I really give a shit that they kill themselves off and contribute to the economy with their tax dollars at the same time. Just don't do it near me where I have to inhale/smell it.
I don't care about adults smoking. Now, children, that is a different story.

Its not about benefits. Its an addiction.

This is a joke, right?

Yet icecream doesn't have disadvantages anywhere near what smoking does.
I've noticed that people smoke to relax and "take the edge off"
They've already started shipping those? My winny blue packets still look the same here in melb

Apples smokes winny blues, sorry I'm laughing a little bit.
They know tobacco produces cancer. They know cancer is horrible. They dont give a shit.

The pictures are to mainly turn off children and teenagers. Cigarette companies target children/teens deliberately flavored cigarettes and other gimmicks. Same goes for dip and all that. A photo will put things in to perspective for kids, plus when you put a picture next to something younger people associate the two. So they see a nasty cancer mouth on a package of cigs and they put the two and two together. Cigs = cancer.
if the pictures bother you, buy a cigarette case and throw away the cig box

If the tons of propaganda in every school in these United States is not enough for you to realize cigs = cancer then you are fucking dumb

Other than that being fat used to have about three quarters the lethality rate, and is primarily lower now at the cost of medication and surgery to prevent it from killing you.

the difference is you can eat icecream and then work it off to remove excess energy, you cannot however have a ciggie, then work off the damage it has done to your lungs.
neither does ice cream, but a lot of people still enjoy it
But you don't get second hand brain freeze. I was getting second hand smoke most of my life (My parents are heavy smokers) and I was always getting bronchitis and have horrible lung capacity. Just from living with smokers my life expectancy has dropped.
I think they should have these pictures and also include pictures of children/babies affected by second hand smoke. I know smoking is an addiction, most smokers admit they would stop if they could so why fight something that may prevent future generations from becoming addicted in the first place?
if the pictures bother you, buy a cigarette case and throw away the cig box
Or better yet, if a picture of what they could possibly do to you bothers you, stop smoking.
In Thailand they print pretty nasty shit, who would want to see something like this?

over time your lungs slowly repair but that requires quitting
either way i'd like my boxes to not have this shit on them. everyone already understands jesus

Some damage is repairable, but much is irreversible damage to the cells in your lungs. As for the images, they're not there for people who smoke, it's there for those who are thinking of taking up smoking.

i know who they're for.
Sorry but I misread it as "Federal judge rules newly required taco bell labels as unconstitutional"
Still pretty dumb if you ask me.
I've noticed that people smoke to relax and "take the edge off"
The funny part is that usually that "edge" is the addiction making them need another smoke.
And even then, unless you live in a WW1 trench and are getting shelled by artillery, "stress relief" is an incredibly flimsy excuse to use something that fucks your lungs sideways.
Come to Australia, we've had them for years.
As in it's a legal requirement.
Generally the people smoking before 14 and 15 are of the 'don't give a fuck' variety, and I'm not sure that a few images (not really that graphic, just watch some TV) are going to deter that.

It's mostly reversible for the first ten years.

You'd be surprised how impressionable kids that age are. While many are probably in the 'fucks not given', at least they'll see the images and remember.

All the more reason not to smoke. It's a habit that achieves nothing but allowing certain people to go out for 5 mins every hour for a quick break at work.
They should just print all boxes with the following message:
"THIS SLOWLY AND PAINFULLY KILLS YOU."
Should get the message across.
They have ads saying that payed for by the city here.
It goes something along the lines of "Dying by smoking is rarely quick, and never painless. If you get *insert disease here (they shuffle them around)* then you can suffer every minute of every day until you die".
I mean as to why someone would start, unless they're a kid in which I guess ignorance would factor in.
We've had these labels in Canada for as long as I can remember.
I work at a convenience store, so I'm kind of used to the morbid pictures on the cover. You get used to them after a while.

Man this poster is living proof of why we need these warnings.
It really goes to show that some people STILL don't understand how dangerous smoking is.

Weed has never directly killed a single person. Hundreds of thousands of people have died from smoking cigarettes.

are my eyes deceiving me or does that graph show that there is more risk smoking 10-19 cigarettes per day than 20+?
Also the whole 'let them do what they want to their own bodies' is bullshit, what about second hand smoke and the knock on affects that has - a lot of children whose parents smoke get asthma and other health problems
