Either you're ironic or you really think it's possible to train fast thinking and good reflexes.
Not quite as crazy as tackling a suicide bomber to the ground before he detonated his explosives, but still fairly crazy.
But then again, in a firefight what else can you do...throw your gun at him?
Kick him in the nuts.
He's still a man.

Pick up your sidearm?
where da sidearm pistol yo
He wasted it shooting seagulls, or atleast, trying to.
Wait, this isn't Call of Duty, is it?
Pick up your sidearm?
As already discussed, soldiers don't use sidearms. In afghanistan supply of equipment is also a problem. Frankly i'm surprised they even have guns.

I think you mean I'm being sarcastic; and no I wasn't.
In the article it said it happened in fractions of seconds; meaning that it was instinct to drive that bayonet into the enemy.
It is possible to train fast thinking and good reflexes.
EDIT:
What do you think he would have done if he didn't have a bayonet?
As far as I know in the British army the only people issued pistols are armoured vehicle crews, medical officers, MPs and dog handlers.
But depends on the regiment.
Quite simply, not all soldiers get sidearms.
My reflexes have increased dramatically since starting to play a lot of first person shooters. Even stopped me being run down by an idiot driver once.
Reflexes can be improved through activities which require you to think constantly. In Afghanistan a soldier needs to think on their feet and listen to their gut as much as their brains. It's a guerrilla war, so the enemy are never in front of you, anyone could be a target or a threat. If they see a van, they have to assume it's a bomb and check it out accordingly. If anything, just fighting that war will improve reflexes and fast thinking...because those are required to survive in that warzone.
The British are still using bayonets?
pft.
Because when your all out of ammo you can just camp in a corner and knife shit.
What happened to his sidearm? Did that run out of ammo too?
I guess this proves Bayonet > Combat Knife.

this isn't cod, regular infantry soldiers don't carry side arms

FFFFFFFFF
Read the bloody thread, it's been said multiple times. Most frontline soldiers are not issued with sidearms.

I don't even think vehicle crews get sidearms either, they'll have carbines or possibly a full rifle seeing as the SA80 is pretty short
He fully deserves that award.

This is one isolated event, you can hardly make such a bold statement off this.
Have you ever tried firing a gun with a fucking knife stuck on the end? Or more importantly, tried stabbing someone with an even bigger gun stuck to your knife?

Not much point giving them a full rifle. If they need to use it then they would need something that can be used easily and retrieved from their vehicle in a hurry. You don't want to be trying to get the gun out of a tank while under fire and the tanks on fire.

Yes they do :raise:
Yes they do :raise:
No
They don't
Only Officers, and even then they don't tend to do that because it shows that they're in a position of authority.

The SA80 is a bullpup rifle though, it's shorter than the M4A1 which is what American vehicle crews are issued with.
When my cousin was in the army, he forgot his bayonet once.
he got shouted at :(
The British soldiers get into bayonet situations quite a lot in Afghanistan. The soldiers need more ammo.

There was a similar article a couple of years ago, and I think the guy was in the same regiment as this one.
My friend was a medic in Afghan, they had to fix bayonets at one point until they called in an air raid to bomb the hell out of a militant controlled village. Oh and who ever said medics get pistols, they have assault rifles I believe.

A US Army combat medic's main weapon is a pistol.
But they use rifles too, they just have to be higher qualified with the pistol.
Yes they do :raise:
no they do not, they only carry the L85A1 which is the standard issue rifle
or L85A2, I forget which

L22 Infantry Carbine, an even shorter version of the already short L85A2.
I thought only guys with Rocket Launchers could get medals, and that they where all gone allready...
The Marines came to our school. Your not allowed to use rusty knives or anything on the enemy. It's against the conduct of war or something.
But i bet they still do.
Fucking war crime,
Most pointless thing I have ever heard seriously...
In war, people die, doesn't matter how as long as it does it quickly and efficiently

Just because it involves killing people, doesn't mean we should do it cruelly and inhumanely. Did you also know that you cannot use a .50 Caliber rifle against a human being?
We have these set standards so that our soldiers don't become barbaric and savage.

Probably because if the dead dudes parents wanted a funeral, they wouldn't want to scoop up the pieces.
Pretty badass, give the guy respect for running at a dude who actually had a loaded gun.
I didn't even know we still had bayonets. That's awesome.
