Guess I missed it.
Maybe they just didn't have a picture at that time

Not really a good excuse for using a picture of an airsoft replica of the wrong kind of MAC-11, but it's not like these kinds of journalists to actually research anything properly either, so eh.
Op is confusing people.
OP is only confusing in that the title claims that an airsoft M11 was found in the locker (which the article does not state) but does diplay the picture of a clearly marked airsoft replica of the Ingram MAC-11 which WAS used in the article until they changed it to a picture of a real (and correct) Cobray MAC-11.
Two kinds of bad research for the price of one!
The National Firearms Act specifies that any weapon capable of full-auto fire is termed a 'machine gun' and is a Class III firearm. It's a correct, if somewhat misleading label. Unlike an 'assault weapon' there is a clear definition as to what constitutes a machine gun.
The definition of "assault weapon" seems to be "whichever cosmetic features people think are scariest" :v:
The article definitely makes it sound like it was real - "...the gun may have been there since the 1990s..." - and not obviously airsoft. The picture doesn't look like an airsoft gun either so I'm not entirely sure what to think here. I'd be perfectly willing to believe a news outlet would make that mistake, but if the police told them it was real I'd be inclined to go with their report.
Earth to facepunch, most people don't burst an aneurysm over guns as much as you guys do and pictures that run in articles are usually either stock or contracted to begin with. Some intern for a dodgy, two-bit digital newspaper who had to fill 50 other articles' dead space with stock photos is at fault. Big deal. To people who don't obsess about firearms the difference between the two images verges on arcane and was just as likely to be demonstrative as literal. It probably didn't even run with its own caption. SH at its finest.
here's what i see
someone stupidly brought an airsoft gun to an airport (very stupid idea)
here's what the news sees
TERRORISTS left an ASSAULT RIFFLE in a SUITCASEBOMB in a locker at JFK airport, the police are CONCERNED

Get your eyes checked son.
An airsoft gun got confused for the real thing because someone isn't obsessed with guns, what a shocker.
you don't have to be a weapon expert to not be a retard

I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a real and a fake one.
The same way I can't name a car.
So it's like the assault rifle/assault weapon debacle?
Assault rifle is a marketing term for a selective fire carbine in an intermediate cartridge, assault weapon is a recently coined loaded term to describe "scary" things. guns like the AR15 should be called a modern sporting rifle or semi-automatic carbine, while guns like the M4 and M16 should be called an automatic or selective fire carbines
