Ya know all these "chromecast" style HDMI sticks that run android....well this one runs Windows 8.1
The Windows version has twice the amount of RAM and SSD space. Which is sort of necessary. 32 GB is pretty cramped for Windows as it is, and 1 GB is only pleasant with Metro apps.
Twice the RAM and 4 times the SSD.
8 GB disk for Linux is basically nothing. 32GB does seem like overkill at first glance, but considering you can (probably) store media on it, 32GB seems okay.
Having a portable media centre with your favourite two dozen movies seems like a neat idea. Although it'd be kind of shit having to control it... maybe a phone app?!
brb applying to intel with this idea.

who wants to carry that around though? especially when there are better solutions
this Intel stick fits in your pocket, i mean thats cool. lugging around a keyboard is lame as shit. especially when the only use you have for it is when you want to play something.
you can start media remotely over SSH with X windows, so there's really no reason to carry this stuff with you. your phone or any computer can SSH in over wifi.

I use that with my NUC.

softkeyboards a shit for desktop experiances
if you want something to fit in your pocket
I have the idea to put my server in the living room as I have Windows Server 2008 installed on it.
As for controlling it, I can use this http://www.remotedroid.net/
It can be buggy at times, but to quickly control it it is good enough.
Dude holy shit
You can use steam in home streaming on this
You could use Steam itself and play any pre-2008 game on it
What is the point in these sticks when pretty much any TV over 32 inches is with a Smart TV xD
You mean apart from the small fact that most Smart-TV's are slower than even low-tier smartphones?

Again, though, that's what the last-generation iBook G4 shipped with, and Apple Stores at the time did stock a healthy selection of games. If nothing else, this thing's a fantastic retro box.

Does the windows store still have those few emulators?
Same specs as a Dell Venue 8 Pro, really. If you want to see how this will perform in gaming, just Google Dell Venue 8 Pro gaming.
So nothing supports it when you plug it into your TV?
Have fun when you accidentally hit it and it breaks off the HDMI plug.
Should have had a bit of cable on it so it's not sticking out so much and at least so people can secure this thing to the TV.

Because that totally happens with usb sticks. Although I guess this is a bit larger so you can get more torque out of it. I seriously doubt you'll be able to break it accidentally like that, though.
he Compute Stick can't draw power from its HDMI port, so you'll need to plug in a Micro-USB cable to keep it powered up
woah
I wonder if it has wifi? If so... I think I found my new Steam Streaming Machine.

Bluetooth means you can use a PS3/4 controller or just a regular BT Controller with it.
And ye, WiFi
Is there actual hardware differences or does the windows license simply cost the $60?
I would pay more NOT to have windows 8

Over time, heavy cables and sticks like this have the capability to dislodge and misshapen the HDMI input on a TV, particularly sets with side-facing ports.

Because it is so hard to format the memory?

uh, you can't just compare frequencies when we're talking about completely different chips, the Atom Z3735F actually performs equal to / slightly above a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, I.E The "go to" gaming processor back in 2007/2008, add to the fact that the iGPU is roughly equal to a 8600GT, and, yes

Wow, that's slightly more powerful than my first "real" gaming GPU, the 9500GT. Progress is cool.

I wish more people got this
Raspberry pi: 700MHz
Intel Edison: 500MHz
yet per core, the Edison outperforms the rasperry pi by about 2.5X. In general, x86 smashes ARM for performance for the same clock speed

USB sticks are small enough where that isn't really a problem, but I had a HDMI to DP adaptor which is about the same size of that chromecast device and the weight of the HDMI cable alone bent the DP male end and when I went to remove the adapter after a while it came off, leaving the DP port inside my graphics card.
woah
Well that's not what I mean't. What I meant is that the device looks too large to safely be plugged in directly to a TV without support.
That being said I just realised you can always get a Female to Male HDMI extension cable so you aren't putting as much load on that poor HDMI port.

If you had vertical HDMI ports it might not be too big a deal, but I'd imagine these should have an extension cord with them for this sort of reason.

I use this, cheap and effective
would recommended
I see them at like every Best Buy.
Use it with an android stick now, and my laptop which is set up under the TV

I had one of these a while ago. Don't know what happened to it, think it's in a drawer somewhere. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to get rid of it, but I always end up getting it back. It's not a bad keyboard, I just never had a need for it.
I don't know if it would work with this stick, though... It's not bluetooth, it's 2.4Ghz Harmony. This stick only has one USB port, and that's needed for power. Unless you can get a powered hub to power this thing, I'm unsure of it.
I'm wondering if having the 8.1 edition would be better for SteamOS, mainly for streaming and gaming of very old games/running some "newer" games on mega low settings?

On very low settings yes.
On very low settings yes.
Still blows my mind.
This small HDMI stick is as good as my PC was just two years ago.
