Alcohol doesn't pollute the air around you as you consume it, stick to the environment, and other nasty shit. It's also not nearly as unhealthy. Neither TV nor fatty foods do that either.
The production of alcohol can pollute water as well as the requirement and needs for harvesting the ingredients needed for it's production can be disastrous on the ecosystem. Alcohol is also fantastically unhealthy for you, how can you honestly say otherwise when most deaths in the United States are thanks to alcohol or incidents being caused via it?
TV can breed ignorance and lead people to not vote, which allows terrible politicians to somehow gain power.
Fattyfoods are a health risk all around as they promote over-consumption and therefore require more environmental damage to continue to feed our habits. The methods of production can and have caused pollution in the past(fatty oils being spilled down sewer pipelines, ect). Fattyfoods can also cause burden and strain on the current medical system, and as of the moment, our country is soon to see a massive increase in diabetes and cancer within the next twenty or so years.
Just because something doesn't have direct effects, does not mean it doesn't have any at all.
The health effects/risks/benefits if vaporizers are still in debate.
But we could both agree that their use is safer then burning the standard paper cig correct?
How does this stop underage people from smoking though?
The most astounding type of idiots are the ones who start smoking when they come to the age where they can just go smiling in the the shop, and buy some cigarettes with their ID.
Which is exactly what they recognized in the Department of Health study as well, saying that "99% start smoking before 21." And what percentage of smokers do you think start before the age of 18?
You guys are just rating this 'winner' because you hate smoking. If it was for anything else, there would be far more hostility to the idea of raising an age limit to 21, an age 3 years after legal adulthood.

Anything that gets less kids to start smoking is okay in my book.
laughing my fucking ass off. as if age limits EVER prevented kids from obtaining shit. hell back in high school all it took was a phone call and i could more or less get whatever alcohol I could pay for.
how about let's work on the root causes of people smoking rather than placing arbitrary restrictions on stuff
Anything that gets less kids to start smoking is okay in my book.
It won't.
The age limit in the UK for cigarettes and alcohol is 18. You'd struggle to find somebody who hadn't smoked or drank before they turned 18, most people probably do at around 14.
All this does is push the issue in to the back, and now we have a black market in which children are either paying adults to go in to the shop for them, or buying knock-off tobacco brands which contain far more dangerous chemicals.
Also, the issue is that an 18 year old is not legally classified as a 'kid', so less 'kids' won't stop smoking. I find it ridiculous that you can be sent to prison as an adult at 18, you can vote, but you cannot decide what you want to put in to your own body for another 3 years.
I don't know why this is getting so many winners. 18 is grown and old enough to make that decision your fucking self. But at 18 you can still join the military? I'm pretty sure getting blown up or shot has much worse health effects then a damn cigarette. Why don't we ban soda to 21 shall we?
I see Facepunch is only liberal except if it's about subjective things they don't like.

Don't care if an 18 year old is legally classified as a kid or not, every 18 year old I know is still a kid. I was the same way. I know when I was 16 getting cigs was not easy at all, this law wont stop it but sure as hell will make it harder to get them.

I know 21 year olds who act like kids, hell, I know 25 year olds that also act like kids. Ideally, there shouldn't be an arbitrary age to prove maturity, but in the eyes of the law, that age is 18. At that age you are legally entitled, and obliged, to experience all the 'freedoms' of an adult - aside from what you personally decide to put in to your body.
At 18 you can vote, go to jail, and die for your country - yet you cannot smoke and drink. Do you see why people think this is wrong?
Stupid. People think that have a few smokes suddenly shortens your lifespan by decades and kills everyone around you. I went through a tough patch during university last year, started smoking just to help relax myself and get through stuff. Stopped when I didn't need them anymore.
People should be able to make their own decisions when it comes to their own body, especially at 18.

I'm going to reply to both of those posts.
First weed isn't as safe as you are making out to be. I know first hands not only was I a dealer but I smoke tons of that shit. Like an ounce weekly. The smoke you get wrong blunts, bowls, and ever bongs still damages your lungs. Second weed can give you an mild form of psychosis after smoking too much or for too long. I know that by experience and it was the most horrific shit in my life. I'm still not 100% recovered yet and its been two months. Also had an seizure from it due to an huge panic attack(never happened in my years of smoking). Weed isn't some god medicine. It's a drug like any other(the most safe but still).
Second, phasing out cigarettes justified it? How about the government fuck off my personal lives. If you don't like smoking cigs good for you, neither do I, but don't enforce your dumb views and lifestyles on anybody else.

I didn't say weed was anything holy fuck, I just said that schools say that it's some gateway drug to meth, they bullshit people into thinking it's some terrifying thing.
and "don't enforce your dumb views and lifestyles on anybody else."
I'm sorry but that's just dumb, Cigarettes are so massively addictive and so many kids are pressured into it at a young age and absolutely cannot quiet at a later age no matter how hard they try. The entire point of addicting substances in Cigarettes is to coax people into being permanent customers.
The health issues they face also puts more pressure on hospitals
there is no real reason to smoke every single day outside of being caught up in doing it and getting addicted. But it's not like there's anything actually wrong with it.
it's the governments job to protect people from obviously terrible decisions.

that's because these people bought into shitty DARE propaganda and believed everything DARE taught them
people are smoking more because shit programs like DARE lie so hard that kids believe smoking isn't so bad, so they end up smoking.
If we actually taught kids the truth about drugs then less would probably do drugs based on, you know, actually trusting our word.

On that first point, it's fun. People smoke 'cause its fun. If you can't get that simple fact into your head you can't have a rational discussion on cigarettes. Why people continue to smoke is a different matter entirely.
On the second point, no it's not the governments job at all to police the lives of their citizens. That shitty thinking has lead us to such wonders such as the war on drugs and the PATRIOT act. I'm free to go buy a handle of whiskey and drink it in one go, why aren't i free to go buy and smoke a pack of cigarettes? There is no sane reason why the government should have any further stake in someones personal life like that. I've got no problems with smokers, they chose to start, they were informed, they did it anyway. I can tell you from experience that this is not in fact the 1980s, and cigarette smokers are looked down upon, "cool kids" don't smoke cigarettes anymore, they smoke weed.

how much money do complications from fatty foods cost the US?
how much money do complications from smoking cost the US?
how much money do complications from drinking cost the US?
(not even taking into account packaging and processing and shit, just health problems, which cost quite a bit.)
And, an explanation on how secondhand smoke harms you more than firsthand smoke?

oh no I agree that we need to tell kids to not smoke
it's just that the way DARE does it is frankly embarrassing and more harm than good
if they were totally straight and honest about drugs instead of going straight into the extreme examples and telling kids about "GATE WAY DRUGS" we would see kids actually trusting their word enough not to do it.

Eh, I don't smoke but I really don't agree with this. On one hand, it does keep smoking away from people who may not be able to understand the full ramifications of it. On the other, it only increases illegal activity.

the point is that it doesn't make any sense for the government to tell you "okay you're an adult now" but you still have to wait to do things to your own body that you should logically be able to do since you're a fucking adult
