What's funny is that most of Facepunch would drop the US drinking age to 18 but rates winner when smoking goes up
Teetotaler here, don't generalize. You might find that fp is split more evenly than you think, even on subjects like weed.
i feel like drinking culture in the US among high schoolers/people under 21 in general is so much stronger because of how high the age limit is. yknow, people always wanting to do what they're not supposed to and all. if anything, all this is going to do is create a similar culture with cigarettes imo
I'm Swedish and I started smoking at the age of 14. Seven years now.
Never had a problem getting smokes or booze at that age tho,
I Think that, if people want to do stupid shit, they will find a way to do it.
that's actually really funny. i see a ton of people in hawaii vape. a TON.
And also, in public places, how much does the poisons that the smoke contains from a cigarette, accualy delute in the air in an open spacee I.E sitting outside a cafe smoking?
In my mind I can't really see any dangers unless I acually blow my smoke in your face while your inhaling.
Someone please help me with this or does anyone have any scientific evidence of this?
Thanks

Yea, it would make sense it would rapidly dilute. Personally I don't have a problem with people smoking outside in public provided they're not doing it at a spot people have to congregate at such as a bus stop.

That all depends on resepect for others and manners!
Good luck enforcing this, at least with e-vapes. People can always get their friends to supply them.
I started smoking when I was 12. This law would have totally saved me!
I started smoking when I was 12. This law would have totally saved me!
Yeah, i don't really know anyone who started smoking after they were 18.
Stupid, people or adults should be able to pick their own poison. Stop pretending drugs aren't fun and focus on harm reduction instead of abstinence.
So many salty smokers in this thread upset that some kids can't go full retard and pollute their own lungs.
Stupid. People can choose to enlist and go to war but they're not capable of choosing to smoke? Inconsistent nonsense. I understand age restrictions on this sort of thing, but I think people are capable of making their own bad decisions long before 21. Same goes for drinking.

"Kids." Like a 19-year-old is so much more of a kid than a 21-year-old. Both should be ready to become functioning adults in my book.

I don't even smoke and I think this law is stupid. Besides being guaranteed to do nothing to help, it just doesn't really make sense.
started smoking at 14, and i am now 21. getting cigarettes is super easy, this law isn't going to really change much to be honest.

i think you mean "so many sensible people that realize this law isn't going to change shit and 18 year olds should have control over their bodies"
the only thing that sucked about this in NY is that it also bars people from buying vapes (even though i understand why, but still, i just wanted some 0 nic vape)
What are you on about? I live in NY and I can buy cigarettes 18 although I don't because smoking is gross.
Alcohol doesn't pollute the air around you as you consume it, stick to the environment, and other nasty shit. It's also not nearly as unhealthy. Neither TV nor fatty foods do that either.
You're pretty ignorant if you think these things even compare.
Okay, we drive gasoline cars everyday that pollute our environment. Does that compare enough?
You guys are just rating this 'winner' because you hate smoking. If it was for anything else, there would be far more hostility to the idea of raising an age limit to 21, an age 3 years after legal adulthood.
Yes people have different opinions about different things.
Okay, we drive gasoline cars everyday that pollute our environment. Does that compare enough?
People who have consumed alcohol tend to cause trouble. Its worse than smoking in alot of ways.

There can be an argument that not all people who drink cause troubles, but every smoker is doing a lot of harm to themselves and many do harm to other people indirectly, second hand smoke and shit, or at the very least, cause inconvenience.

But drinking also harms you? And most smokers are aware of how much other people dislike it, the ones you see not caring about who's right next to them as they light up a cig are a minority

Well, the numbers aren't exactly known who is a minority and who is a majority here, but yeah, I agree. According to my observation, it really seems like assholes are a minority, then again - I'm biased, I smoke. I just pointed out a common argument. Drinking harms you, but isn't it like, to a lesser degree or something? Unless we're comparing alcoholics and chain smokers, but that's pretty extreme.

If smokers smoked as often as most people drank they would probably live reasonably long lives.

What? That's two different things though, and the damage is different. The organs you're dealing damage to are also different, why compare it so directly?
i think most of the people rating this winner either A) think it will actually do shit to keep kids from smoking LOL or B) believe that secondhand smoke is some sort of curse created when a cigarette is lit that tracks down anyone in a 10 mile radius and smothers them to death
aw fuck does this mean that i can't smoke weed when they legalize it here?
