Concert by comedian Ralphie May canceled over racist Native American jokes from previous show

Also I get the joke and its not a shit joke.
Its basically a racist rant over the dumbest of things, an oscar nomination and winning.
Like of all the things to be racist about, that's what you pick. He's mocking racists.
Actual racism is often in comedic jokes but is usually just making fun at racists or using it as a preface to another joke. There are few comedians who would tell a racist joke and actually legitimately mean said racist thing in that context.

Essentially this.
It's like calling,
I hate two types of people. Racists, and the Dutch. Seriously, fuck the Dutch.
a fundamentally racist joke that the teller should be ashamed of, because it promotes xenophobia and nationalism by being told.
Cancelling a charity event in light of a joke you didn't find funny but that itself did not reflect the views of the teller in any apparent way*, promote or argue for racism in any way, or condone racism in some explicit manner is flat out, a stupid thing.
This is one of the cornerstone failures of "Offense Culture" or whatever you might call it. That is restricts expression, and condemns those who do so broadly that someone who has fundamentally done nothing wrong, joins the same category as Strom Thurmond and Adolf Hitler.
*To my knowledge, Raphie May has no anti-Native American agenda to pursue.
This is on par with considering a movie racist because it has a racist character in it.
To the credit of Sanford Center they only had the out of context part of the joke which made it seem racist. Still they should overturn the decision once they hear the whole story.
Racist jokes are still racist. If the joke is about the idea of racism, that doesn't make it racist. Impersonating a racist as part of comedy isn't the same thing as being racist.
Actually being racist isn't any more okay simply because of a comedy setting. What he said was about actual racism.
Making a racist joke and actually being racist are two very different things.
You can purposefully be racist for the sake of a show as part of a joke without being racist when being serious.
Someone who makes a really mean spirited joke isn't instantly a mean spirited person. Someone who makes a joke about pedophiles isn't one himself. So on and so forth.
The stuff this guy says sometimes is just disgusting though sometimes. Making fun of mentally challenged people, koreans, etc.

And how exactly do you distinguish between people who are genuinely racists and those who feign racist behavior for the sake of the joke?
This is stupid. The whole point of jokes is that they're not to be taken seriously.
This outrage culture bullshit is the death of comedy
i don't think so. people have always been getting shit for controversial comments. i don't see the need to link something that has literally always happened to "outrage culture" and "the death of comedy"
with that said, i don't think the joke is racist. the fact that the "alcoholics" comment was unwarranted is literally the punchline
There's a lot to the context of a joke.
If while he called them all alcoholics he was pretending to be a stereotypical drunk football fan then the entire dynamic of the joke is changed.
As against PC as I am, this doesn't sound like a joke to me. Imagine if he said the same thing about blacks?
afaik Blacks did actually make it to the Bronze Age though. I think they must've reached the Iron Age too. So they have some 'privelige' and it's ok to say that.
Not true there is still one race that people still make jokes, death threats and tend to blame for the worlds troubles.
Black people?
No, that came before. The whole joke was about him being bitter because a movie he liked got snubbed. The "racist diatribe" was just the setup. He wasn't just saying that shit for the sake of making fun of native americans. You can't honestly be telling me you don't understand that, right?

can you fucking idiots not ignore these very important posts?
Do you have anything to say about this, Bitches?
People intentionally ignoring how comedy works in favor of feeling good about themselves while bullying a dude from raising charity. Incredible.
"edgy" comedy is so cringey.
Except it isn't edgy. Watch you some concerts.
Then you get to the punchline where it turns out he only said that because "Dances With Wolves" beat "Goodfellas" for an Oscar and you realize IT WAS A FUCKING JOKE.
This is why people should have looked up the full bit before passing judgement.
I'm not going to say he's a racist but it doesn't sound funny. I mean, as stated before, you couldn't switch the Native Americans with black people.
"Black people are just a bunch of cotton pickers that don't know their place and never became civilized. Don't worry, my friend, for I am simply angry because Morgan Freeman won an Oscar for Driving Ms. Daisy instead of Robin Williams for Dead Poet Society!"
It's just lazy shock humor. And I'm not against shock humor - shock humor can be great. But it seems like there's a push to say stupid shit and then say that's the joke. I mean, in a few years we're going to get a similar article where a comedian walks on stage and screams "NIGGER" and we have a lot of people saying, "Man, this PC audience needs to get a funny bone. He was obviously parodying racists. It was a joke."
