Human Gene Editing Receives Science Panel’s Support
I actually am an upper division genetics student. I will do everything in my power to find the gene that turns hair blue so we can have a real life Beast.
And to exterminate furries
Not gonna happen, these are biologists, not programmers.
But maybe Biohacking parents will?
And that what subculturally interested too, Beast people*.
(* maybe realistic anthro animals)
I think the best you can realistically hope for is looking like this and having some awful cosmetic surgery.

This is the stuff of science fiction, but you should keep your expectations grounded.

Want to be and/or fuck other species of animals is different than wanting a superior or replacement artificial limb or body.
Why not both? :sax:

You're overestimating the intelligence of parents. And you don't get this far in biology without learning the ethics.
Furthermore I don't think the possibility of a race of ubermensch 200 years into the future is a good excuse for why someone should have to live with cystic fibrosis or muscular, skeletal, or neurological disorders when it could have been prevented. I don't want to have to tell kids to enjoy their muscles while they have them because doctors refused to cure their multiple sclerosis out of a fear that in the future, rich people will have blue haired beastmen kids and the powers of the X-men.
Not sure I agree with this.
I dont due to how prone humans are to abusing things or fucking shit up.

Also more powers from BioShock and Orphan Black too.

As someone with type one diabetes, I absolutely cannot agree more.
I think it's time that we stopped subjecting our children to the cruelties of natural selection, and take the reign ourselves.
The wars of the future wont be about GM-humans vs normals, it will be humans vs self aware quantum computers. we have to get superior now

Sorry, meant to link the wiki page on the image, should have phrased that better I guess. The image is of the first known case. I mean to say that the idea of germ line modification is the stuff of fiction - it really is going to be world changing whether or not we like it. Even so, we need to remember this isn't magic.

people need to realize that there is only so much you can do, without killing the host.
When can i just pump myself full of retrovirus' and jump into a pool of stem cells like Ra's Al Ghul in a Lazarus Pit to come out revitalized.

There's something empowering about reading that.
"Nature thinks it can fuck us? Well fuck you, Nature, we're in control now."
people need to realize that there is only so much you can do, without killing the host.
I guess there's just a bit of a barrier to really understanding the limitations of this sort of thing. Do people really expect it to be able to remodel bone and silly things like that?
The reality of it is beautiful enough. We have on the horizon a cure for virtually every genetic disease we can think of, and the capacity to treat many communicable diseases. We could culture bone marrow modified for the production of immune cells with genetic advantages over pathogens.
For the undeveloped humans-to-be, one can only imagine the possibilities. Superhuman strength, absurd endurance, tolerance to poisons, improved intellect, disease resistance (e.g. no more plaque deposition in arteries), improved senses, etc. are certain to be possible. Biological immortality? The mind runs wild.

Future philosopher s main concerns will be "what is human?" and "what is life?"
Why? We may end up seeing a variety of different types of humans in the future.

Nope Bolded parts would still kill the host.
Minor increases sure but still not as far as your thinking.
Nope Bolded parts would still kill the host.
Not necessarily.
I think those have been main concerns since philosophy came to be.
Although I would argue that human is what a human defines itself to be. We have that power.
Well with new variants of humans, it will become a new raging concern.
Religion will be seen in a new light. Being able to jack in the net with wetware and end up getting pocessed by a virus
would force new perspectives on all things spiritual.
We geneforge now boys, these are truly exciting times to live in for the sake of scientific advancement.
I feel like that's incredibly optimistic. The moment a prospective parent can ensure their child is disease and defect free, and that they can increase their potential intellect while minimizing personality defects they will. Give that enough time and you'll have an entire gene pool of elevated people who are smarter, stronger, and in Positions of power.
This is pretty much my biggest fear.
Gene editing in a world with rampant income inequality. What could possibly go wrong?
Hold on to your horses, The washington Post version of the story, is not as sensationalist but will bring down hopes.
Ethicists have been working overtime to figure out how to handle CRISPR, the revolutionary gene-editing technique that could potentially prevent congenital diseases but could also be used for cosmetic enhancements and lead to permanent, heritable changes in the human species.
The latest iteration of this ongoing CRISPR debate is a report published Tuesday by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine. The report, a series of guidelines written by 22 experts from multiple countries and a variety of academic specialties, presents a kind of flashing red light for CRISPR.
[Scientist prevails in epic patent fight over CRISPR]
The report did not recommend an absolute prohibition of gene editing on the human “germline” if such interventions can be proved safe. This would involve genetic changes to eggs, sperm or embryos that would persist in an adult and could be inherited by future generations.
So in reality this is almost a full on ban with execptions.
Blue hair? Plenty of blue pigments we could express in place of natural melanins. I would suggest looking at the basidiomycetes for any novel color :science101:
You gotta have blue hair.

Obviously exaggerating a bit when I say superhuman, but the limits naturally imposed normally can be removed. The baseline can be dramatically improved. Look at myostatin dysfunction in humans and in dogs as it is currently documented (see bully whippets). Consider what drug enhanced athletes have accomplished, men like Eddie Hall/Hafthor B. are as gods among men in terms of strength. This sort of potential could be the new norm. Modulating growth hormone and androgen expression isn't that dangerous.
Something analogous to the PEPCK-C "super" mice could be easily found with a bit of research looking for the express purpose. Obvious risk where metabolic stuff is concerned, but it could be done safely.
why now? huh? Russia?
Genetic disorders and diseases are pointless bullshit. Let's blast em!

The poor workers in a far future live underground while the rich live above ground who will have their food mysteriously appear and have taboos of wandering about too late at night.

by the time such a reality exists society will be different in ways you can't imagine, hopefully. if it hasn't changed then we'll be fucked by our existing problems long before these new things can make a difference.
we should embrace progress like this. the universe is vast and incredible and as far as we know, we're the only ones in it. it sure won't miss us when we're gone, so full speed ahead.
Would be cool if it was possible to work on older adults to combat transplant rejection.
Genetic engineering shall destroy furries AND terrible grammar.
Ok, destroying Beast people by genocide will destroy scientific progress
And was referring real mental disorder to treat not your fantasize one.
