At first I was like what the hell
But then China.
I heard from someone from Hong Kong that mainlanders sometimes let their kids shit in the streets.
That happens in Korea too. I heard stories from my dad when he was there on active duty in the 80s.
As a swede who's worked alot with tourists, i can say that germans are my favorite. They always seem so happy to be here. And polite too.
Not buying it (entirely). Rich Chinese people believe rhino horns improve your sexual performance... and shark fin soup is supposed to be a delicacy due to its exclusiveness.
And let's not talk about their "ancient tradition" of flaying dogs alive for human consumption.
If anything, most of the Chinese culture, while rich and incredibly fascinating, can be mind-blowingly archaic at times.
It all has to do with them being isolated as a country. The may have industrialized, but they never Westernized. Their culture has barely progressed since the end of the Qing.
Hell, even Mao saw that problem, although his dumb ass simply made it worse.
The chinese mainlanders that I went to art school with were not like this at all. They were extremely kind, polite, their english was flimsy but they tried to understand at all times. They were nothing like this and they were genuine chinese mainlanders hailing from several different provinces.
I wonder where these types of tourists come from
Yeah most Chinese I've experienced in Seattle, WA have been very kind. Sure, they miss some niceties but w/e, they don't know THAT well.
lol no, rhino horns are not an aphrodisiac, they're prescribed for their "cooling" effect, and even then they are falling out of favour nowadays with TCM practitioners. The biggest market today for rhino horn is Vietnam, where they believe it can cure cancer and other ailments because a politician was rumoured to have been cured of his cancer after consuming rhino horn. There is also no tradition of flaying dogs alive, they are raised and slaughtered like any other farm animal in China.
Way to demonstrate your cultural awareness.
Not really a piece of information I care about, honestly. It was an example, I don't really know what use do they have for rhino horns, other than it's linked to their ancient medicine.
Fact - they use tiger parts for wines and medicine, but since its availability is going down, the demand for lion parts is increasing.

Another fact - elephant and rhino poaching is fueled by the Chinese economic boom. So it's not just about "new money" people with literally zero manners, it's also the affluent ones who support and promote that stuff.
I've read that they believe it's bad for you to hold it in... as a result, they end up shitting everywhere. Apparently it's costumary for the lower Chinese classes, but as they became wealthier, they're practically the "Beverly Hillbillies", except they make the actual Beverly Hillbillies look like the most polite people ever.
That's a pretty good comparison. One other aspect we can't ignore, the toilet facilities and habits we have in the West are not universal. Plumbing, and an endless supply of water and toilet paper are not luxuries that all people grow up using.
Also, consider something like tipping here in the US. Everyone knows what that is, everyone knows you're supposed to tip, but not everyone does it. There are a lot of people who ignore social rules and just do things their way.

Lived in China for 3 years, never heard of anyone even considering eating dog, let alone flaying them alive. Dunno what sort of places you guys go to.

Possibly NSFL if you're a dog lover.
Mainland tourists are fucking weird, I'm chinese-american and every single time I speak in perfect english in front of mainland tourists they stare at me like I'm some sort of freak. Usually its older people.
I've snapped a few times when their gaze was too creepy for me to ignore and yelled at then, but its downright weird.
what kind of stare is it blank anger.?

It's a fur industry thing it seems.

Having been to China myself twice, I can confirm kids shitting and peeing iss not uncommon.
Had a little girl piss in the front of a kfc as I was walking out one time.
It really is a mixture of mostly uneducated families moving into cities and extremely relaxed manners compared to the west.
Also as far as I know, the dog eating thing is like one city/few cities in the north which is like the outback to them.
tourists period are pretty shit
I haven't got that much of a gripe with this but at least put some fucking newspaper down or something ffs.

reason I don't have much of a gripe with it is that I think it's asian standard to squat to open their bowels, in a way it's more effective in the Pooping. In this sense I can kind of forgive them as airplane bogs are really underwhelming to use.
If it was a grown adult pooping in the cabin then that's unacceptable.

It seems to hit two extremes at UW, either they're really kind and humble and just adorable or absolute assholes.
There are a few R8's on campus driven by Chinese exchange students, and they drive very rudely and wkth no regard for others. Also, the Chinese student association js where most of them retreat too and in one of my math sections they found a way to get the test the day before- meaning they could set the curve stupidly high. So for me, an 85 on the test was a 2.2. Or maybe UW is just that competitive
That being said, it seems to be a minority. The test are all super kind. In my English section last quarter a lot of them tried really hard to get better at spoken and written English, and they all loved to hear stories from those of us who had spent some time in the country and such. And they had neat stories too! Made me feel awful having to point out so many grammatical mistakes, but they seemed to handle it well.
Its unfortunate, minorities of assholes can color our perceptions far more than a mass of quietly kind individuals

I shouldn't stereotype, but the rjcher the Chinese kid the worse they seem. The families or kids who really struggle to get into the us and pay our obnoxious rates (50k+ year fkr exchange) are the kindest

I refuse to believe that cats and dogs are actually cleaner than a human.
