This is a common strategy amongst kids nowadays, a bunch of kids start a fight with an adult and the rest of them video tape it.
If he fights back, they have proof of him "assaulting" them and if he doesn't fight back they have a cool video to show their friends how gangster they are.
Most people that were filming that incident were probably friends.

Anyway, the article says that the victim lost his book and they couldn't retrieve it because it was too close to the electrified third rail. In my opinion, they should force those damn kids go and get that book back, and if they get zapped, well too bad. At least there would be less idiots like this in the world.

or people who have a competent level of self defense and know that if you are attacked you should immediately retaliate+incapacitate before the situation escalates
if you're a woman or a small nerd I could understand being afraid of riding the subway at night. being a man, especially of that stature, this guy completely could have defended himself and knocked his assailants out. instead he chose to do nothing but scream and run.

As a person who's frequent to DC I can safely say it's one of the most dangerous fucking cities in the United States; statistically I think it is, actually. It's not any bullshit like "the bystander effect" or anything like that; you simply don't get involved in a scuffle like that in a goddamn DC metro. The people in DC are unpredictable; hell, people in [I]any [/I]city are unpredictable. If more people joined in against the kids who were harassing this guy one of them could have easily had a knife - if they got charged by people from the crowd I guarantee they'd take it out and there would be more blood and significantly more conflict.
Honestly all of you are talking from this sheltered view of reality from the fucking suburbs. Breaking up a fight at school or at a local place in your town is different; you're likely to know the people around, and have a feel for the town. A city is a dangerous fucking place. Anyone remember the poor shmuck that got shot in the head last year when he tried to save someone? That's not a rare occurrence in an urban environment; they're violent.
Really, people; don't talk shit about people you don't know about. Not a single individual in this forum would intervene in that situation for several reasons; it's dangerous to your well being, and you don't know the area so you'd naturally be intimidated and feel like more of an alien, a tourist to the area.
