Texas Governor Rick Perry calls second session to pass abortion law
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — After a one-woman filibuster and a raucous crowd helped derail a GOP-led effort to restrict Texas abortions, Gov. Rick Perry announced Wednesday that he's calling lawmakers back next week to try again.
Perry ordered the Legislature to meet July 1 to begin 30 more days of work. Like the first special session, which ended in chaos overnight, the second one will include on its agenda a Republican-backed plan that critics say would close nearly every abortion clinic across the state and impose other widespread limits on the procedure.
"I am calling the Legislature back into session because too much important work remains undone for the people of Texas," Perry said in a statement. "Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn."
Women don't count as people in Texas.
I love living in Texas for the most part, but I wish it wasn't so fucking ass-backwards with regards to social policy.

gerrymandering
Which commandment said "Thou shalt not abide by common sense, only thy Holy Words in this text?"
I had a whole lot of schoolwork related to the Bible (having gone to a Catholic school). To a fault my teachers taught me to look for the deeper meaning in the Word (spoiler: it was be a good fucking person to people, because God loves all of us). The second biggest takeaway was that the Bible was written a really long time ago, and common sense should be your guide on what was applicable to that specific time.
Fuck.
/end rant

Welcome to politics.
I wish we could make some kind of bill that prevents religious beliefs in deciding political action, but of course that would spark another shitstorm within itself.

most religious nutcases who support anti-abortion policies just want an excuse to feel they're better than others, they don't actually care about the scripture.

if its not religion, it will be something else, its just an excuse(althrough, religion tends to be a "better" excuse than most).
this law only bans abortions on fetuses that are over 20 weeks old
this law only bans abortions on fetuses that are over 20 weeks old
That's a single amendment of it.
this law only bans abortions on fetuses that are over 20 weeks old
and would close all but 5 of Texas's abortion clinics

Skimming the surface, aren't you?
That's only one of many pieces to it.
"The overwhelming majority of people clearly don't want this. Let's try to pass it again!"

I thought Facepunch would say she was just doing it for the political points, or is that only when it's a Republican?
are we supposed to pretend that a woman standing up for women's reproductive rights is a bad thing
"The overwhelming majority of people clearly don't want this. Let's try to pass it again!"
To be fair, the reason it didn't pass was because of a filibuster.
To be fair, the reason it didn't pass was because of a filibuster.
.......................from the people, quite literally
Calm down guys, this is Perry we're talking about. If everyone bitches enough, he'll figure out no one wants this law and get back to combing his hair. (Or whatever he does when we're not looking.)

Here's the article detailing the results of this poll if you don't want to look at the raw data:

From that article:
A majority of Texans oppose the legislation currently being considered by the legislature that imposes restrictions on abortion and 80 percent do not want abortion to be raised during the special session of the legislature called at the end of May by Governor Rick Perry.
Of registered voters, 63 percent say the state has enough restrictions on abortion and 71 percent thinking that the Governor and legislature should be more focused on the economy and jobs. A majority opposes the sort of legislation passed by the state Senate and being considered by the state House during this legislative Special Session, believing that it imposes further restrictions on abortion. Overall, only 34 percent trust the Governor and the legislature to make decisions about women's healthcare.
So, even though the sample size is a little on the low side, it looks like Texans oppose this bill.
This muther fucker needs to get the boot and be barred from any further political discussions.
I mean for fucks sake....did they even BOTHER taking the public's opinion into account? Many seem to be against this bill. At least, according to the data anyway....the data thats SUPPOSED to influence these kinds of decisions.
I thought retards are barred from office.

It's almost a requirement in most southern states.

Problem: Rick Perry doesn't give a fuck about what "Texans" care about. I love living in Austin, but i hate having to share a city with this fuckwad.

We do. It's called the First Amendment, which says (among other things) that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion", specifically put in to, in the words of Thomas Jefferson himself "erect a wall of separation between church and state".
"Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn."
This guy is quite a skilled practitioner of doublethink
