(Reuters) - A gunman opened fire from a rooftop in a Finnish town centre in the early hours of Saturday, killing two people and wounding several others, police said.
An 18-year-old man wearing camouflage clothing was arrested after the shooting in Hyvinkaa, a small town 56 km (34 miles) north of the capital Helsinki.
The motive for the shooting was unclear. It followed a series of shooting sprees in Finland in recent years and came less than a year after anti-immigrant gunman Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in a rampage in neighboring Norway.
The suspect had no criminal background and police said he likely acted alone.
Police could not comment on whether he knew his victims. Both of the dead were 18-years old. One was male and one female. Seven others were wounded. One, a policewoman, was in critical condition.
Media reports said some of the victims, including one of the dead, were members of a Finnish baseball team, Hyvinkaan Tahko, which had won a game on Friday.
The police's regional chief inspector, Timo Leppala, said the shootings were first reported before 2 a.m. The suspect fled but was detained a few hours later. Police said they found two rifles afterwards.
Finland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world and a series of mass shootings prompted the government to toughen its gun laws last June. The suspect in Saturday's case did not have a license, police said.
In November 2007, an 18-year-old student killed eight people at a high school near Helsinki before turning the weapon on himself. The following September, a 22 year-old killed 10 people in a small western town of Kauhajoki before shooting himself.
In December 2009, a man shot four people dead in a shopping mall in Espoo after knifing his ex-girlfriend to death. The man later killed himself.

There are tons of more information on the finnish newspaper site iltalehti, in finnish thought.
That's a lot of shootings for country of such size.
They have sudden mass shootings occasionally, but have a very low gun crime rate overall
Stuff about Finland only gets posted on Facepunch only if it's a school shooting, it seems.
And even then the source is Finnish.
I'm Finnish so that means I know about it better than you.
These guys are obviously inspired by eachother.
Edit: No sarcasm intended.

Latest news say that he's "regretting what he did", he could have thought twice before going nuts, but noooo.
What's up with the Nordic region having more mass murderers all of a sudden?
Doesn't Finland have the highest rate of school shootings?
They're cleaning up themselves.

Pretty sure China (or some other Asian country) has that.

Wasn't that the States before they got all stuck-up with school security?
I mean, considering there's little to no security forces in Finnish schools, there's a very peaceful education system.

According to the police and their psychologist was supposedly an adequately popular person who didn't spend all his time on the internet, he did sports and had won a cross country skiing competition one year, he also practiced running. He also had an airsoft hobby but hadn't ever practiced real shooting, the victims were relatively close to him when he started firing from the low roof.
The guy left to do the shooting after an evening in the pub with some friends at 23 o'clock, he went to his parents home, found their gun cabinet key and stole 2 rifles, then went to carry out the shooting.
He didn't play alot of violent videogames apparently but he did play ice hockey games.

What, do some countries actually have security forces in schools?
Stuff about Finland only gets posted on Facepunch only if it's a school shooting, it seems.
This isn't directly a school shooting, the dead victims and shooter were just in the same school (all 3 of them were in different campuses I believe).

Then again, there's around sixty times more people in the USA
SH makes me cry every day.
But, then again, I get to eat a handful of salt with the excuse that it's replacing the lost saline water in my tears.

Some american ones have private security
Wasn't the shooter booted out of the army too some time before the shooting, or is that just a rumor? If his health was good, as implied by his sport hobbies, he must have had some mental problems there too.
