Yeah no, they all fucked it up, some a tad bit better, some the same, some worse than him (Prodi says hi). Haven't followed these last 2 years but is Berlusconi even in the run anymore? Either way it would all pale in comparison to Grillo getting in, that would be horrible.
Also Italy's shit situation isn't due to any single politician, in fact it's barely due to politicians at all, it's the people that are dishonest and nepotists (before you say anything, yes I am Italian and have lived there about 16 years, and no not the first 16 years of my life). Everybody cheats the system at every turn if they can and paying taxes is seen as stupid. Italians love to blame politicians and claiming to be victims while they evade taxes at every turn. Politicians aren't from Mars, they are people like everyone else, if every one of them is scum, maybe you should take a look at the pool from which they are picked.

Actually, every time time Prodi managed to get elected, the deficit steadily climbed down. From the 121% of the Ciampi/Berlusconi government, in 4 years (!) he got it down to 114, a 7% reduction. Actually the first time Berlusconi became a PM the deficit went up from 115% to 120% in just one year.

Before Berlusconi resigned the spread between the Italian [I]Buoni[/I] and the German [I]Bund[/I] was almost 600. Two days after Monti was chosen as the new PM, it got down to 450.

I have no interest in discussing when all you can say it's the same trite litany that people use to justify being lazy and uninterested in politics. There are competent and incompetent politicians in Italy, just like everywhere else in the world, and the reason Italy is facing a crysis right now is not because "Italians keep re-electing Berlusconi", but is rather the result of a really bad election law that was put in place to favour the Right, a difficulty in modernizing the country and having to go against the most powerful criminal organization in the entire world, a group of criminals so powerful and ubiquitous that they're keeping an entire half of the country down. About the taxes, the evasion rate in Italy is 30%, while in a country like the UK, certainly taken much more seriously on Facepunch, the rate is just over 21%. So, the difference is not really all that big, and while I agree that tax evasion is a problem, is not nearly as endemic as you'd like to picture it.
