• PlayStation 4 will only allow 4.5 GB (guaranteed memory) of it's 8GB RAM, for developers to use

Considering this is several times over more powerful than what the PS3 was using, and the fact its GDDR5 ram, I'm not worried about this announcement in the slightest. PS4 still blows the xbox one out of the water. Granted, Microsoft has begun to get their shit together, I may consider getting an xbox one after the price drops somewhat. Overall, its shaping up to be a good generation at least.
STOP THE PRESSES
Update: Brian Provinciano, head of confirmed PlayStation 4 developer Vblank Entertainment, has called the Digital Foundry rumors “absolutely false.” “It’s absolutely false,” he said in response to the rumors. “Absolutely ridiculous.” Provinciano went up with an editorial on the drama, in which he provides insight. He wouldn’t confirm how much memory is used, however. Meanwhile, over on NeoGAF, known insider Thuway said PlayStation 4 will reserve six gigabytes of RAM for games and two for the operating system. BruceLeeRoy, another known insider, and forum admin Kagari corroborated Thuway’s report.
That's reassuring, and much more realistic.
Is there any game out there that uses more than 3 gigs anyway?
Pretty much all games are 32bit which limits their address space to 2GB (can be expanded with LAA) however if we are lucky, this next generation of games might bring 64bit support so we can actually make use of our RAM and CPUs.
I run Crysis 3 with Firefox in the background with 5 or more tabs and I barely hit 3.
I don't really have anything open other than Steam and Firefox (2 tabs) and I am using 3.21GB of RAM because I have 16GB RAM installed on my machine. Windows naturally prepares services and files and stores it in the RAM if it detects you have tonnes spare. It also scales back if you open something intensive like a large game or RAM heavy software (anything Adobe).

You people were surprised this was false? Did everyone forget that Digital Foundry is so deep in Microsoft's pockets, they don't know what it was ever like being out of them?
Considering that there's not a single game I know of that completely utilizes my 8gb of ram I'm not really all that surprised, especially since consoles tend to rely more on their GPU from what I understand.
The PS3 OS took more memory in the early days if I am not mistaken. They then went ahead and optimized it so more memory is freed up and can be used for other things. Same thing will happen with the PS4. They will optimize it and give more memory to the games. If the information I received this is not the case with the Xbone. They can't change how much memory the OS takes once the console has shipped or something. Don't quote me on this though.
I think the article is misleading to people who don't understand how the machine works properly.
