Rules change.

I think the American driving theory test needs revising.
My Subaru doesn't let you turn on the fog lights unless you have your regular lights on. I asked at the dealer about this, and they said they had to because it's "law in America."

That's how it works here, not sure if it's the law but there's no reason you'd need your fogs on and not your lights

Really? My friend has a BMW where the fog light switch can turn them on without the lights, so you get the really low-angle light beam to see the road markings but no glare from your headlights.
Then you can have the "side lights" (whatever they're called, first notch on the lights switch) so people can see you from behind.
Pea soupers are the worst.

Orkel seems to make his own rules now, do forgive.

Ive seen some crazy people in fog that makes me just want to wait instead of risking it. Common sense is a luxury these days it feels like.
Here in Texas, bad weather means drive faster. Whether it be fog, drizzle, a deluge or anything else, it seems like idiots go 20-30 mph faster and get more of that road rage going. The few sensible people on the road end up paying for it by getting plowed into by said morons.
Today the roads were really bad. It was lightly misting, which pulls up all of the oil out of the pavement and makes a thin sheet on the road surface that makes it ridiculously slick. I was hoping it would have started raining to wash all of the oil off the road but that never happened.

Aren't you supposed to drive slowly in fog?
They aren't required in America; the only car I know offhand that even came equipped with rear foglights is the Oldsmobile Aurora.
Which is funny, because some areas (San Francisco, for example) get extremely heavy fog at regular intervals.
Subarus.

All 3 Subarus I have owned (MY97-05) you can onlt have the foglights on if if the headlights on, and the headlights on only if the ignition is on. There is a button on top of the steering column that turns the parkers on without a key. I live in Australia and drive back roads over rivers and dams and headlights + foglights deals with the fog we get, which is on par with pictures posted earlier.

I've been through something like that except it was snow. Complete whiteout at night and you can barely tell where the road is. Since I have a near base model car I have no fog lights. Everyone was down to 30 mph in a 75 mph zone which is a terrifying thought in itself. Nearly rear ended a semi that I could barely see 50 feet in front of me.
In bad fog i run my hazards, i want people to be able to see me and not die

I've spoken with Orkel about stuff like this before and last I checked his opinion on the matter is some things don't need to be written in rules. Basically if something sounds like shitposting or just being dumb or stupid, it has a possibility of being banned, and while sometimes it allows for some brilliantly funny posts, I've begun to agree with him.
The post he banned was retarded, and added nothing.
I had some intense fog yesterday night on the road, I didn't see anything and it was raining. So I stopped at the side and waited a bit.
It changed fucking nothing.

My Peugeot and Audi, and my parents Skoda and Honda all won't let you switch on the fog lights without having your standard lights on main beam.
Some it's physical on the switch, others, you can press the switch, just the fog lamps don't come on.
So I would assume this is a pretty standard feature spanning most makes.
Aren't you supposed to drive slowly in fog?
No you drive faster to clear all the fog away duh
We had some gnarly fog a couple weeks back. I could barely do 40mph on a 70mph freeway, as I could hardly see a car length in front of me. It was like 2am though so no one was on the road.
In bad fog i run my hazards, i want people to be able to see me and not die
I don't know if it's the same in America but it's against the highway code here in the UK to use your hazards in that situation (or actually any situation other than to warn other drivers on the motorway of an obstruction up ahead). The reasoning is that it could be confused with signalling to turn
I imagine that is amplified by the fact a lot of American cars seem to use brake lights as turn indicators
Plus if you're in fog that could look like you're pumping your brakes or something equally confusing to other drivers
Not sure how it could be confused with a signal to turn. What are you going to do, split your car down the middle so you can turn both ways?

If another car or something is blocking one side. Although if I saw hazards I'd presume he had stopped / broken down and be prepared to overtake
I read it as frog :(
