Also the starter kit never came with the Xbox Original, I thought? It was sold as a separate thing unless it came with some special edition console.
The starter kit didn't come with the Xbox Original (XBL wasn't even a thing when the console was released), but as far as I know you could only get XBL by buying the starter kit, which meant that people who had XBL had mics.
Again, the Xbox has NEVER shipped with a headset unless it was a package deal some time AFTER the console was released. .
wrong
No one is looking for HD surround sound when using in game voice chat, a simple ear bud and mic will do.
Dunno about you, but earbuds are absolutely terrible for me. The ones that go in your ears get loose and make the audio sound all fucked up. The one like that comes with the PS4 (and similar) end up falling out within 10 minutes of use. Headsets would be a much nicer option.

I'm not sure if you ever had one of those in your ears, but without the padding (which never stayed on longer than 10 minutes at a time) you wanted to rip them out instantly. Fine by me. I don't even want a mic...nor will I even be playing multiplayer. Assuming I was gifted one of these things the omission of the headset is good.
seriously what consoles ever have actually come with headsets
I got my Xbox 360 with a headset back when the 360 was new. And I think the PS4 is shipping with them.
I wouldn't mind this as much if I could just plug in the headset I already own, but I can't because only the MS headset can plug into the controller (Other headsets' plugins are too big). I understand that they want to sell more of their own products, but come on...
You could actually plug in other headsets, as long as you bought an adapter. That said, aren't they getting a new standard connector on the new ones now?
usb so licensed products only
Huh, USB headsets are semi standard nowadays though no? I mean they're worse than 3.5 but still fairly common.

If we got cheap actual headphones the price would probably go up about ten dollars for the console and you'd still probably want to replace them. Basically having earbuds benefits us who are going to replace the cheap earbuds or headphones for actual quality ones within a year.
