Mostly because they were not expecting it from Valve to allow them to sell it on steam.
My biggest issue is why did they do this now, after all this drumming up of attention when as soon as it got accepted on Steam Greenlight they could have started charging for the mod. This announcement is LITERALLY a dance and a show to announce that what was once free now costs $20. This is a very poorly guided announcement.
Just to clear your guys opinions on how Black Mesa has a price tag instead of it being free. First off, this whole bullshit of Black Mesa being a mod is getting sort of annoying, i don't see Black Mesa as a mod, i see it as a complete fan made remake of the original Half life game. You shouldn't compare this to the stupid mod stuff that Valve tried to pull off about a week ago. Also, give the developers some slack, if you were able to recreate a game and spend at least 8 years trying to perfect it, you think it would be nice to give them money for all their effort. Thats why Valve asked the Black Mesa dev team if they wanted to charge a price tag. Also the price tag is only 20 dollars, thats pretty goddamn cheap for a well made game like Black Mesa is right now. Also, this version on steam is basically a complete redo of the original release. The engine has been modified, new models have been added, new voice acting for the marines, the Ai for the marines have been completely reworked, the HEV suit has had a complete makeover, and certain levels have been graphically enhanced. Also. IT HAS FUCKING MULTIPLAYER.

Multiplayer is definitely an addition, but not one that I personally feel and I imagine many others as well that justifies a price tag for this thing when the 90% of that "85%" is still FREE. If there are massive changes between the original incomplete release and this incomplete release they are not doing a good job of illustrating that at all. This is an awful awful way to launch this thing.
Probably the reason they are releasing this thing at the moment is probably to fund for the Xen Chapters.
They certainly made the rest of the game with the budget they've managed to get, I don't see why in three years time they would need more money for not having any progress made apparently. That logic isn't there, dude.

By that, they are basically doing their own version of Xen instead of the original Half life version. Also, they just started working on Black Mesa again very recently instead of spending three years on it.
Mostly because they were not expecting it from Valve to allow them to sell it on steam.
They did get their ok from Valve 1 1/2 years ago though.

Pay money for a free product that as far as I know is the same thing with mulitplayer? These guys are about as communicative as Valve but with less of a track record to destroy.
I'm willing to buy the finished product once it's eventually finished (so long as it's worth buying), but $25 is asking a bit much for a remake of a game that's included in a $15 four-game pack, honestly.
A multiplayer that essentially plays the same as HL1 DM is not worth 20 dollars
Ya? So what? Your getting a complete remake of an old game. This whole thread is basically dwindled down to "Im not paying for a game that was free since the devs want some cash for their hard work"

This is most definitely a new product. [editline]5th May 2015[/editline]
Ya? So what? Your getting a complete remake of an old game. No one here is against giving these dudes money for their hard work, just there is literally no reason to buy this EXCEPT you want to spend money to support these guys, and their methods aren't really convincing. Here you all go by the way, here's the mod: http://gyazo.com/96587f2cc9b0d161741c0bcc78bad305
1) It's not $25
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was told they're planning on making the full release $25.
2) It's not the same thing as the original Half-Life, not at all. This is most definitely a new product.
I know it's a complete remaster with many tweaks and minor gameplay changes to make it more playable, but I've already finished the free version probably nine times now, and I don't see the point in buying it right now unless there's going to be more content guaranteed in the future. With that said, I'm probably going to buy it once it's out of early access just because it's a great remake. I do believe the devs deserve compensation for their hard work
Xen is going to be a free update. I don't see why people are mad about paying $20 now since they'd pay the same money if it came in 2017 for the same pricetag.

Either way, I just bought it with my brother. [T]http://i.imgur.com/5Zq9hcq.png[/T] They really deserve it after eight years, and I seriously enjoyed playing it when it was released.
Saying you don't want to pay 20 dollars for it at this point is fine. Saying it doesn't deserve to be 20 dollars and that the devs are literally Hitler just makes you an asshole.
Saying you don't want to pay 20 dollars for it at this point is fine. Saying it doesn't deserve to be 20 dollars and that the devs are literally Hitler just makes you an asshole.
I think literally no one in this thread has had that reaction.
Well I'm personally happy with it. I thought the original was already extremely high-quality and polished. If they had charged for the original, I would've paid for it. I'll gladly pay for it now. Also, to their credit, they did put it up as an "early access" game to make sure you're aware that it's not 100% done yet.
It's pretty simple. If you think it's not worth it, don't buy it. But IMO, if you enjoyed Black Mesa, you really should give them a few bucks. I mean, think about it, these guys worked on it for such a long time, and the final product is very good. I really did enjoy every second of it so I'll gladly give them my money. Besides, the money could help them work on more content for the game, which is always good.
I think literally no one in this thread has had that reaction.
Jzzb --> 20 bucks for the same shit as the mod and no Xen gg fuck yourself black mesa devs

Eh, the video was cool but I won't buy it til it has Xen. I already played it the first time when it come out for free, so I have no reason to buy it now (until Xen comes out)
Speaking of, is there a way to throw a couple bucks their way directly?
I don't think so, no. They should have a donate button somewhere... (or you could just buy me the game, that works too. :n)
Why are people complaining? Its one of the only good mods released recently. If those typical pixel sidescroller "indie" flash games can charge money, then why cant something with nearly a decade of work behind it?

I would play for it, maybe not 20 bucks but 15 is more than reasonable. But to play the devils advocate:

On top of that, I think that what is now the Steam version of it has grown enough to be called a standalone game worthy of being paid for, rather than a modification.
