No, every aspect of the current state of The Simpsons really has hit rock bottom, including the animation. I'd tell you why, but this article sums up the contrast quite nicely: http://deadhomersociety.com/2010/04/15/compare-contrast-nude-burns/ But that's not all. Here's a fine piece highlighting the expressive, lively, and dynamic quality of animation the series used to represent: http://deadhomersociety.com/2010/08/02/animation-showcase-homer-goes-to%C2%A0college/ To put it simply, it doesn't matter how much HD you throw at it. The dead and sterile digital Simpsons will never be as cromulent as this:
Nor the writing so eloquent. "THE BEE BIT MY BOTTOM AND NOW MY BOTTOM'S BIG"
I'm about as big of a Simpsons fan as they come (not really, I'm not quite that crazy), nothing makes me happier than the prospect of episodes of the old quality coming back. My favorite episode has always been Lard of the Dance, if not for just the bit with his eye getting suctioned by the grease vacuum.
THE DIGITAL AGE: Transforming mediums of art and story to industrialization and mass production of proven formulas.
There are a lot of newer cartoons that use strict formulas like that but still look very good and fluent. It all depends on the studio.
So then what is the general consensus on the last good season before it turned to shit?
That first one looks way more natural. The second one is just bad.
Pretty much everything about it is bad, note how the paper bag bounces in the 2nd one after it's placed down, the wall behind the shopping carts in the original one actually had detail, while the new ones is just bland. Not even going to mention the horrible animating. Funny how digital age makes animations easier to make and then they become half arsed. You would think that the oncoming of digital animation would put more detail to the shit they write, but instead they used it to make more.
The newer version looks so awkward. Marge's blank stare, and the animations feel so half assed...
I feel like this is less about it being done half-assed and more on a change of focus. The old one was more focused on Marge and her worrying about where Maggie was, whereas the new one was more focused on Maggie and her rival. [editline]24th November 2012[/editline] Though I do agree that it still looks awkward.
It's funny, I've been watching The Simpsons for a long time and I have never noticed the lack of Marge's facial expressions in the newer intro compared to the older one. Looking at it closely, it looks like they cut out a part of it.
Urgh, I miss how lively and smooth the old animation was, it might have not been HD of proportionate but it was much nicer to look at. The new animation just looks like bits of recycled art tied together in flash that have been animated, much like some of the shows on Adult Swim.
I remember there was an episode that aired last year, or maybe earlier this year. I usually try to watch a new Simpsons episode now and then to see if they're improving at all (they're not, most of them are awful). The episode I tuned in on that day had a gigantic animation error that supposedly nobody missed. It was a 3D shot of the Simpsons house from outside with Marge doing shit through the window, but her hair was clipping one of the 3D walls and it looked terrible. I attribute the decline of Simpsons to when George Meyer and John Swartzwelder left. George Meyer hasn't actually left, but he stopped going to the table reads quite a few years ago. He used to go to the table reads for every episode and put in some of the best jokes. John Swartzwelder was also one of the best writers of the show. He wrote the most episodes (59 episodes), and most of those are attributed to being some of the best in the series. In my opinion, his style of comedy practically defined Homer's humor. Take a look at the episodes Swartzwelder wrote. He also occasionally contributed jokes to episodes that others wrote, of course. He left in 2004, but did help out with the movie. I believe George Meyer stopped going to the table reads around that time as well. That's not to say the series started going bad around then, there are still some great episodes around 2004/2005, but anything past that begins to be a stretch.
