Where The Internet Lives: Google gives rare look inside its data centers

Take a good long look in those server rooms.
Somewhere in there, deep inside, one of those servers has handled my porn searches.
Magnificent.
I wonder where they snoop at all of our precious keywords so they can send us ads, fuckers.
I wasn't aware that companies still used tapes as a viable format to store data
It is the best backup method.
Pretty much every company uses tape backup.

Just watch, any crumbs that fall onto the floor will vaporize upon contact. Every photo I've seen of those offices so far are spotless. They've got a utopia over there.
So the atmosphere is so laid back that upon hearing this was happening, the employees all went out of their way to put as many jokes into the pictures as possible?
Kickass.

A lot of companies do actually, they're much cheaper to use and are capable of storing much larger amounts of data than you might expect. They aren't as fast though, so typically they're only used for longer-term storage applications.

spill a coffee
coffee isn't even on the ground
Only one cleaner
I've been to the google headquarters, they have full kitchens and gyms, if they had beds the employees would never have to leave

when you see it...
That room's so big you can see fog due to draw distance not being enough!

Severe weather shelter area.
Okay....
Also noticed they serve some kind of beer, at least I think it is, please enlighten me if I am wrong.

Still though, that is an awesome workplace, so Google... Give me a Job or that Propeller Hat....your choice
I wasn't aware that companies still used tapes as a viable format to store data
Because tapes can be simply stopped and stores and don't need to spin to be ready to spin. HD's are either dead or dying. Also like said before, they are very cheap for their space. So you keep hundreds of TB or petabytes on site. At my job we do weekly tape backups.
I don't like this. What if one of the pipes burst and leaks internet?
The entire google staff is exposed to 10,000 times the safe yearly dosage of porn.
That Pit Stop area sure is tacky.
Love the tech side of it though. So many beautiful servers.
Don't google need a shit ton of these data centers? Considering digital technology grows exponentionally, I'd think the size of data transfered over the internet would grow at the same speed?

When I saw this picture, I thought of how much winter really means to me. For some reason, I spent all summer going "Ugh, winter is terrible, summer is awesome", and now looking at this, I realized something:
Winter is the fucking BOMB.
That clear air, that fresh feeling all over, my badass winter coat, that first snowfall, that calm quiet caused by the snow muffling tire sounds, that evening walk in -20 degree temperature with the only sound coming from crispy snow crunching under your boots...
Everything about winter makes you feel so cool inside. And I'm not talking about the cool temperature, no. It's like a barren wasteland out there, with you being a lone survivor. Shit man, I love winter so much!
So then I scrolled down, and it turns out it's a picture of the data centre in Hamina, Finland.
And I live in Finland.
It feels really good to be here right now. Just thought I'd say that.

I thought that chimney looked familiar.
It's stayed there since they took down the old paper factory that once stood where the data centre now stands.
Holy Tits
I stand by what I said about Google being the best employer to work for. did you see all the little things they did just to have fun with the 'street view' inside there?

Where I live it's summer all year around, I've never seen snow in my life.
Please don't rub it in. :(

And here in Australia we get either a stupidly hot summer, or an incredibly cold, dark and wet winter.

I wish I could make you feel better by saying that it isn't that great, but I can't.
It's too fucking magical.
I'm sorry :(
Can I work as a cleaner in the Google office
I'll do anything to work there
Can I work as a cleaner in the Google office

ummm
so you'd be a pretend cleaner? the office has nano-self cleaning technology. [SUP][sub][sub]powered by Google.[/sub][/sub][/SUP]
Looks really laid back there, nice.
I also love their sense of humor.
Feels good to know that once I finish my studies I could land a job at google as an it engineer. Well, I think I have to try to do it at least.

giant android and scooters? :v:
Scooters are commonly used in data centers to get around.

If Willy wonka was in technology, this would be it.
