I wouldn't. You also don't assault your boss or a coworker and expect to keep your fucking job.

Except the coworker in question has dealt with the situation by sitting down with Clarkson and shaking hands on it, finishing the ordeal on good terms and won't press charges.
As such, the situation should be fine.
If I was the boss of a company and one of my employees punched another one I'd sit down with them, examine the situation and evaluate what the course of action would be. If it was with the case of Clarkson I'd take his situation into consideration as well as the coworkers perspective. If they both work it out and this is a one-off thing (and it was, Clarkons hasn't punched anyone before to my knowledge), then I'd let it go and let the two get back to work. If this was a repeat offense or the situation could not be calmly discussed (ie. the coworker was still furious) or if the attack was entirely without reason (even psychological) from the assailant then it would be different, and action would need to be taken.
It's really not that difficult.
Basically the media blew the story out of proportion forcing BBC's hand.

Two grown men should be allowed to sit down and work out their issues without a media circus, criminal charges, and endless interjection by people who had no part. When tensions get hot, shit can happen, even between friends.
Even though it's the technical term, calling a argument and slap to the lip "assault" is a bit overzealous, especially when both grown men sat down like adults, discussed it, and had no hard feelings.
Nowadays the media will jump at anything that happens related to famous people like the seaguls from Finding Nemo
To bad Jeremy Clarkson acted like spoiled brat. Assaulting a producer is no way to act.
The problem with it is that Clarkson is under extreme stress right now. He has mostly everything on his mind, weighing him down. And, as he said in an earlier interview, he's a perfectionist, he needs to do everything to the letter or beyond, he doesn't half ass things.
Yes, he did assault a Producer, but he was genuinely sorry and the Producer, who's worked with him, can understand where he was coming from. They both reached a level on a professional level, where they had things and the job to do, and a personal one, which the Producer knew why Clarkson acted that way and Clarkson knew he what he did was unreasonable.
This doesn't half-ass and try to dissuade his assault, but still. His removal wasn't even done well, and the problem with it was that the person who was his superior held a grudge against Clarkson.

Pretty much, had it not been tabloid the BBC could have just penalized clarkson internally instead the media basically crucified him
too low of an amount to begin with...maybe it was a insult
Wow... I'm amazed that an "Amazing" offer only yields those guys slightly over 1 million per year. If I recall correctly, the friends characters were making >1 million per episode.
Richard Hammond and James May will turn down a £4million BBC offer to return to Top Gear – instead launching a new show with axed Jeremy Clarkson.
A source claimed the trio, along with executive producer Andy Wilman are “very close” to signing a big-money deal with Netflix and no amount would persuade them to return to the BBC2 show without Clarkson.
Just give those millions to the dude who got hit lol
The live show was amazing. Well worth the trip. Plenty of hinting.
You cannot repair what has been broken BBC
But isn't that what repairing is? I mean you wouldn't repair something that isn't broken.
Not defending the BBC, but I don't think this makes as much sense as you thought.
Launch a new season with Hugh Keays-Byrne hosting in-character as Immortan Joe from Mad Max.

Co-hosted by Hugh Keays-Byrne in character as Toecutter to argue that bikes are cooler than big muscle cars

Top Gear likely costs an assload more to make per episode though, they have to put a ton of money into cars, stunts, flights etc
You know, what can they do? Clarkson screwed himself over, and, in turn, screwed them over. It's a win/lose scenario for everyone. They should really just let it go. Clarkson decided to do what he did, and that really just kind of put the epitaph on the stone.

All the cars would be chrome.

They couldn't have made it more obvious themselves if they tried - in a very "Oh no we've accidentally let slip that we're going to Netflix" kind of way.
Let us not forget there was plenty of dismissing The Mirror's sources - including from myself - when it was alleged by an onlooker that Clarkson perhaps may or may not have possibly hit somebody over a steak, a source claimed.
