http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/02/feds-approve-new-gulf-of_n_598199.html out of all places, let's approve it in a state where it's health, economy, and livelihood were fucked by a oil spill.
yeah Louisiana actually benefits from offshore drilling this isn't hurting them too dramatically it's going to destroy Florida but whatever
guys guys you know the apollo 11 blew up how dare they build more spaceships!!!
As long as it's well maintained, there shouldn't be a problem.
There's plenty of alternatives to oil. Hemp resin can be used for a majority of plastics [editline]04:28AM[/editline] To be honest, this isn't so much about the risk of another spill as it is in bad taste to start a new drill in the light of a bad disaster.
115 ft is a reasonable depth. Deepwater Horizon was far, far deeper- hence the name (I'm forgetting the exact depth of the well). BP had never really planned for a clean up operation at those depths, nor has the government, nor has any other group for that matter. That permit (for Deepwater Horizon) should have never been permitted, but MMS is gamed by big oil corporations and BP got it anyways, crossed their fingers, and hoped nothing bad would happen. Oops.
I'm fine as they fuck off from deep water drills for a while until they prove they have the stuff to handle their fuck ups
You can't compare spaceship explosions, which contained astronauts who knew the risks and never harmed anyone but themselves, to an oil spill that has caused a load of damage to unrelated people. If a space ship were to break up in the atmosphere and crash into a major city, somehow, I bet people would be pretty pissed about making more space shuttles. Of course obviously that would be a much worse situation than the oil spill but you get the idea and I suck at analogies.

Who thought that drilling that deep without any fail-safes like relief wells was a good idea?
Well 115 feet isn't that deep. If this sort of shit did happen again (whatever the odds of that are) fixing it would be much easier.
At 115 feet (35 meters) probably all of their nonsense attempts would work, even the really dense ideas of just spraying concrete all over that shit could work. [editline]02:05PM[/editline] The well that fucked up was 305 times as deep as the one they approved now.
